It's also the notion that "we're going to do it right the first time!" No. No you're not. There is no "right way" of doing these things. Especially when these things are creating something that has never existed before. Even if your product isn't a shiny new idea and you're building a better mousetrap, your mousetrap is going to be different. "People copy examples and then they wonder what is the trouble. They look at examples and without theory they learn nothing." There are certainly better ways of doing things, but that does not mean there is specifically *one perfect way* to build software that will account for all current and future constraints. Don't forget about your old buddy, the inevitable change.

Effective teams don't require knowledge transfer when someone leaves. A consistent need for knowledge transfer is symptomatic of systemic issues. Rethink cost before you dismiss teaming by assuming it's more expensive. When someone leaves, that knowledge is never fully transferred. It is gone and you can't buy it back. Beyond the impact to building new things, when you need to maintain or fix old things, you're flying blind and probably introducing new issues. This takes up even more time. Isn't everyone complaining about productivity and efficiency? Siloed knowledge will eventually become lost knowledge. Immeasurably expensive to lose. It will take more time to decipher the part(s) of the system written in silos. This is expensive in time, money, and the human cost leading to burnout, further departures, and even less knowledge remaining. This is a vicious cycle that can be resolved through appropriate teaming *and* through systemic change. Teaming can reduce costs, defects, bus factor, burnout, and time wasted. Teaming will improve effectiveness, value, quality, and leave your teams healthier and happier. Interested?
