About us
Project Apis m.'s mission is to fund research and efforts to improve honey bee health and vitality. Our name comes from Apis mellifera, the scientific name for the honey bee. Project Apis m. (PAm) is the go-to organization at the interface of research, honey bees, and agriculture. Since 2006, we have infused over $10 million into honey bee research and $2.9 million into forage programs, resulting in science-driven resources for bees and beekeepers. We work closely with commercial beekeepers, growers, and scientists in the USA and Canada to identify challenges as they arise. We then fund projects and direct strategic efforts focused on practical questions. PAm offers graduate scholarships to develop the next generation of bee scientists and has expanding efforts to put forage on the landscape where bees need it most. We are a 501(c)5 nonprofit organization governed by a Board of commercial beekeepers and other agricultural stakeholders. A volunteer Science Advisory Committee of well-established honey bee research scientists helps guide our selection of rigorous, applied projects. We are proud to be collaborative, practical, accountable, efficient, and flexible. Learn more about us at www.ProjectApism.org

Omar and Julie’s video highlights the critical issue of small hive beetles (SHB), invasive pests that cause significant damage to honey bee colonies. To study SHB populations and their impact, Julie established four apiaries in Mississippi, setting traps weekly to monitor and analyze population trends and environmental effects over multiple years. Bring your Bee Suit! A few weeks ago at the Eastern Apicultural Society conference we took part in a hands on workshops with bees. There were about 25 hives on the hotel lawn, for workshops and Master Beekeeping courses throughout the week, here we see Jeff Pettis leading a hive inspection workshop and North Carolina Apiary Inspector Don Hopkins helping manage the week’s apiary! In addition to this pop up apiary, some other famous insects made cameo appearances: the spotted lanternfly is an invasive pest that’s everywhere, and even impacting honey crops with its prolific honey dew production. And of course the double emergence of periodic cicadas was a steady hum. #EasternApiculturalSociety #EAS2024 #BeeSuit #BeekeepingWorkshops #HiveInspection #JeffPettis #DonHopkins #ApiaryManagement #MasterBeekeeping #SpottedLanternfly #HoneyBees #BeekeepingCommunity #HandsOnBeekeeping #BeekeeperLife

At EAS (The Eastern Apicultural Society conference) last week we loved watching keynote talks from the APIMONDIA president Jeff Pettis, shared global perspectives and US advances (many funded by PAm!) regarding emerging threats like Tropilaelaps spp. mites, Yellow Legged hornet and climate change. The latest of his projects funded by PAm focuses on testing organic acid. PAm Science Advisory Chair Michelle Flenniken spoke about her work on honey bee viruses- a topic of interest no matter how many colonies a beekeeper has!
