Thank you to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Elizabeth Kolbert and The New Yorker for featuring our work in this week’s issue! Read the article to learn about how our nonprofit organization, Project CETI, came to be, the interdisciplinary work we are doing across a team of over 40 scientists and 15 institutions to translate whale communication and to join our field team on the ground in Dominica. You’ll also get a first look at an unexpected event we witnessed this summer: a sperm whale birth! CETI’s synced drones and hydrophones captured the before, during and after the birth. We saw and recorded 11 whales work together to support the birth and lift the new baby whale out of the water to breathe. Later the sperm whales were joined by pilot whales and dolphins. The CETI science team is now working to uncover insights from this extraordinary event - we already know that the baby whale’s mother, nicknamed “Rounder” and sibling “Accra” were among the group..stay tuned for more on this to come! https://bit.ly/3P1die5 David Gruber Shane Gero Yaniv Aluma Yaly Mevorach Kevin George Odel Harve Ricardo Barrett Darren Gibbons Dan Tchernov shafi goldwasser Pernille Tønnesen Courtney Baumgartner Mapal Ishay Fiona Korwin-Pawlowski Makeda Warner Peter G Tyndale Stephon Camara Denley Delaney Gasper Begus Andrej Leban Michael Bronstein Antonio Torralba Daniela Rus Giovanni Petri Jacob Andreas Peter M. A nonprofit applying machine learning & robotics to listen to & translate the communication of whales in Dominica.
About us
Project CETI is a nonprofit, interdisciplinary scientific and conservation initiative on a mission to listen to and translate the communication of sperm whales off the island of Dominica in the Eastern Caribbean. For the first time in history, advances in technology have made it possible to understand the communication of animals. We at CETI are unified by the shared goal of applying technology to amplify the magic of our natural world. Our science team is made up of the world’s leading artificial intelligence and natural language processing experts, cryptographers, linguists, marine biologists, roboticists and underwater acousticians from a network of over 15 universities and other partners.

Continuing our #CETIScientists series, we are honored to introduce Stephanie Gil one of CETI’s Robotics Team members.👩🏻🔬🤖 Stephanie is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and the director of the Harvard REACT (Robotics, Embedded Autonomy and Communication Theory) Lab. As an undergraduate student at Cornell University, Stephanie was a researcher on the panoramic camera team on the NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration 2003 Mars Exploration Rover! Her research is centered on developing and using technologies for improving robot-robot and human-robot teamwork; looking at ways that use wireless signals to improve communication in multi-robot teams, enhancing situational awareness, and core multi-agent algorithms. Stephanie’s research is vital for CETI’s work, as robotics such as: aerial drones and underwater drifters, amongst others, are utilized by CETI in order to locate, follow and document whale movements and behaviors. Learn more about Stephanie’s research and discoveries here: https:/react.seas.harvard.edu/ 📸: Stu Rosner, Harvard Magazine #CETI #Robotics #Harvard #SEAS #science #robots #REACTLab

We are excited to announce our partnership with New York University School of Law’s “More Than Human Life” Project (MOTH)!🐋🪲🐘🦒🦚🦫 The MOTH Project is an interdisciplinary initiative working to bridge the gap between human and non-human rights and well-being. MOTH aims to address the disconnect of humanity from the larger web of life which sustains it; through re-considering our understanding of rights in general, to be inclusive of the rights of nature and the rights of non-humans. Combining the scientific findings of CETI with MOTH's goals of legal protection for the more-than-human world, this partnership opens the door for brand new policy to be developed and generates discourse for global advocacy!🌎 To learn more about MOTH and CETI’s partnership check out MOTH’s blog here: https://bit.ly/3BIxkHp 📸: Arun Madisetti #CETI #MOTH #Morethanhumanrights #interspeciescommunication #policy #law #nonhumanrights #interspeciescollaboration New York University

CETI is excited to share that our Founder and Lead David Gruber will be speaking at the 32nd annual Animal Law Conference, happening Oct. 18-20th in Portland OR and online!🐋🦎🐘 ⭐️David will be joined by CETI partner Professor César Rodríguez-Garavito, the director of New York University School of Law’s “More Than Human Life” Project (MOTH), for a panel discussion on Sunday 20th Oct, which will explore key evidence demonstrating the complexity and sophistication of language-like features in whales and other species, and discuss a strategy to advance case law, and develop legal and ethical guidelines necessary for the protection of these species. The nation’s preeminent animal law event, the Animal Law Conference is co-presented by the Animal Legal Defense Fund and the Center for Animal Law Studies at Lewis & Clark College Law School.
