“Creators should own the audiences they’ve built.” Project Liberty Founder Frank McCourt on why our networks should be portable at this year’s #SXSW. Dive deeper and learn about Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP), an open protocol and potential standard for social networking and social media. It is not owned or controlled by any one person or company, allowing anyone to build on it or use it. DSNP is stewarded by Project Liberty Institute. https://lnkd.in/d5zyeBpj

About us
Project Liberty is a far-reaching effort to build an internet where individuals have more control over their data, a voice in how digital platforms operate, and greater access to the economic benefits of innovation. Launched in 2021 by civic entrepreneur Frank McCourt and supported by a $500-million commitment, Project Liberty encompasses the work of the Project Liberty Institute —a 501(c)(3) with an international partner network that includes Georgetown University, Stanford University, Sciences Po, and other leading academic institutions and civic organizations—and Labs, a technology business launched by McCourt Global that is focused on developing the next generation of digital infrastructure.

💡 “There has to be some way that the fate of the user becomes the fate of the platform.” - Jaron Lanier At Project Liberty’s Summit on the Future of the Internet this past fall, tech guru Jaron Lanier pointed out that there are no long-term incentives for platforms to continue serving the individuals who made their businesses successful. This is why Project Liberty Institute's Fair Data Economy Task Force and work on a comprehensive roadmap for transforming our digital economy is so important. https://lnkd.in/gZRNwSY7 📹 Watch Jaron Lanier's full talk here: https://lnkd.in/gnJkBq-G

💡 "Venture capital (VC) is undergoing a fundamental transformation. As innovation increasingly targets regulated industries, the rules of the game are changing. The most successful VC firms of the next decade won't just provide capital—they'll become sophisticated policy players capable of co-designing regulatory environments for cutting-edge technologies, not merely reacting to them."
Excited to share the latest VC+POLICY article I co-authored with Nicolas Colin on why leading VC firms are becoming policy powerhouses. https://lnkd.in/e3EMYjqb We decode four critical pillars driving this transformation: 🛠️ The next wave of VC-backed innovation is targeting inherently regulated industries—AI and data, healthcare, energy, dual-use or advanced manufacturing—where policy engagement isn't optional but essential from day one ⏳ Extended fund lifecycles and new liquidity mechanisms now reward firms that can navigate regulated markets over longer time horizons 📈 What was once viewed as mere regulatory compliance has evolved into strategic engagement that creates alpha ⭐ Policy sophistication is becoming the competitive differentiator separating market-leading VCs from merely commoditized capital This isn't just a response to more complex regulation—it's a structural shift in the industry's business model that may prove to be one of VC's most consequential evolutions yet.

💡 "Collaboration is more important than ever. So many of us have been quietly doing the work - but it's time to be loud! We're more powerful when we move together." - Project Liberty Institute CEO Sheila Warren.
Chief Executive Officer, Project Liberty Institute | Board Member | Global Executive | Strategic Advisor
It has been a whirlwind week - from panels to dinners with old friends to celebrating Holi - but I’m ending the week feeling motivated and inspired. Some things I’ll keep thinking about: ▪️ We need to think differently about finance and capital. It's not just about the money - it's equally about using our voices to actively shape corporate and govt. priorities and ways of working. Let's be more open and experimental. The world needs it - and can't wait. ▪️ Collaboration is more important than ever. So many of us have been quietly doing the work - but it's time to be loud! We're more powerful when we move together. ▪️ If you're thinking about sending a message of support or encouragement, do it (and if you're not - think about doing it). So many are struggling right now and you never know how much it can mean, or what conversations it might spark. And most of all, I’m feeling very grateful for community and for those who fostered these conversations! Thank you to Sarah Howard Global Philanthropy Forum Jill Gunter Espresso Systems Wendy Hanamura Internet Archive David Casey Funding the Commons Dana Lanza Confluence Philanthropy and Sara Teichman Julia Brindisi Tony Blair Institute for Global Change for creating space for exceptional groups of people to gather in community this week. Special thanks to my co-panelists Wagner Albuquerque de Almeida, Kartick Kumar Jean Shia and Peter Laugharn for being some of those exceptional people joining me onstage yesterday at the Global Philanthropy Forum! Our conversation could easily have gone another hour. (And h/t to Sara Pantuliano, whose leadership at ODI Global has shaped a lot of my recent personal thinking around development financing, the topic of our panel.)

📊 Friday poll: As AI search tools become more popular, the Columbia Journalism Review argues they have a citation problem. According to the article: “While traditional search engines typically operate as an intermediary, guiding users to news websites and other quality content, generative search tools parse and repackage information themselves, cutting off traffic flow to original sources.” We want to know how you’re feeling about AI search results. Comment and tell us more. Read the article: https://lnkd.in/enzmEhA8
