  • NEW: TBI’s Disruptive Delivery Data Explorer is live. Built on a survey of 12,000 voters across six major democracies, our new interactive tool reveals what really drives voter behaviour – and why mainstream politics is under pressure. Explore the voter blocs – from the ‘Insurgent Left’ to the ‘Traditional Centre’ to the ‘Insurgent Right’ – that group political parties by how similar their voters are. Including mainstream and rising parties from six countries, as well Reform in the UK, Marine le Pen’s movement in France, and Germany’s AfD, the Disruptive Delivery Data Explorer shares a provocative view into how collapsing trust, economic pessimism, and a demand for bold change are reshaping the political landscape, and where surprising common ground exists. 🔍 Dive into the data here: https://bit.ly/4loyHxt #DisruptiveDelivery from TBI’s Robert Johnson, Kayla Crowley-Carbery, Alex Otway and Tim Rhydderch.

  • On 29th April, TBI’s Director of Climate and Energy Policy Lindy Fursman will be speaking at the Innovation Zero World Congress, discussing how policymakers, financiers and business leaders are driving low-carbon investments in non-OECD countries.     With Dr Ruth Kattumuri and Joseph N., this session will explore innovative strategies that bypass fossil-fuel-dependent models, prioritising renewables, sustainable infrastructure and equitable growth to accelerate a clean-energy transition.    📅 Tuesday 29 April 2025  ⏰ 15:40 to 16:20 BST  📍Olympia London    Register now to attend:   https://lnkd.in/ePW5TFiu

  • Today’s Spring Statement from Chancellor Rachel Reeves was, by design, light on policy. But the government still has the chance to reimagine the state. While prudent decisions on tax and spend as announced today are necessary, they aren’t sufficient. We need a bold, forward-looking vision that embeds AI, data and digital identity technologies into the heart of government, transforming how government operates. From #digitalID to smarter planning, from preventative healthcare to tech-powered public services, TBI has set out a path to unlock up to billions of pounds in savings annually. To deliver on the government’s ambitious plans, and go further still, a more radical shift is needed. • We were delighted to join this critical discussion on enabling better health outcomes with technology. Thanks for having us!

Together with the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI), Stanford Biodesign convened 30+ leaders and change makers across policy, investment, philanthropy, industry, and entrepreneurship in Washington, DC, last week, for an in-depth discussion on building more sustainable enabling environments for locally-led health technology innovation. The group discussed venture financing and policy frameworks, digital public infrastructure, health-tech design education, and other key levers that drive sustainable innovation. Stanford Biodesign’s Gordon Saul, Krista Donaldson, and Mohit Singhala highlighted the East Africa Biodesign program, while TBI shared their work on digital health strategy in Guyana. Together, the group formulated a path to creating a supportive ecosystem for local innovators in emerging health markets. A huge thank you to TBI for collaborating with us on this roundtable and to the remarkable leaders and organizations that joined us! #healthtech #gobalbiodesign #innovationeducation

    Executive Director, Policy

New from me on Politics Home - a short piece talking about staying positive about what tech can do to make government better in the age of AI. To its credit, the government gets the potential of tech, and is heading in the right direction. What's needed now is a real sense of belief in a reimagined state - efficiency and reform is good and important, but a more fundamental change is possible. That's what I and colleagues at Tony Blair Institute for Global Change spend our time thinking about, and working with governments round the world to implement. Drop me a line if you'd like to join the effort! https://lnkd.in/euSSyRhb

Director, Economic Policy - Tony Blair Institute for Global Change

Amid the sweeping welfare policy changes announced earlier this week, one detail may have slipped under the radar: the government is consulting on a new form of unemployment insurance. Under the proposal, those who have paid National Insurance contributions in the past two years would be eligible for a benefit worth £138 per week. This is a step in the right direction. The UK has among the lowest levels of unemployment insurance in the OECD, and current eligibility criteria are strict. Moreover, as the pace of economic change accelerates- with AI-era technology and the green transition driving greater churn in the labour market - unemployment insurance will only become more important. Without an adequate financial buffer, newly unemployed workers may feel pressured to take jobs that do not match their skills, exacerbating labour market mismatches and dragging down productivity. The problem is compounded by the UK’s low rate of private saving, which leaves many households without sufficient emergency funds to weather income shocks. Yet while the government’s proposal help, they need to be bolder. At just £7,176 per year, even this new, more accessible benefit remains relatively meagre. And if fiscal pressures mount, history suggests it could be scaled back—just as earnings-related unemployment insurance was dismantled in the 1980s. Instead, we propose a new approach: LIFESPAN funds (Lifetime Income Flexibility and Employment Savings Programme for Adaptive Needs). These would act as a personal income buffer for periods of unemployment, built up in a way similar to private pensions. Workers would be automatically enrolled (though could voluntarily opt out), would contribute a fixed proportion of their income, with additional employer contributions. Just as with pensions, these funds would benefit from tax-efficient savings incentives. But crucially, unlike pensions, LIFESPAN funds could be accessed before retirement in cases of redundancy, parental leave, or retraining—helping workers navigate periods of transition without falling into financial distress. Any unused savings at retirement would then seamlessly roll into an individual’s pension pot. For more on this proposal—and how AI-driven technological shifts could reshape the labour market—see our latest piece: The Impact of AI on the Labour Market. https://lnkd.in/eExbjtbx
