🤔 Over the years in the #FinOps space, I’ve encountered quite a few bold claims across the vendor landscape. Here are the top five you should be aware of: 1️⃣ - “Free” Products and Services: The term "free" often comes with hidden conditions. You might not see the costs upfront, but rest assured, there’s always a price to pay, even if it’s not immediately transparent. 2️⃣ - Using a Vendor’s Commitments (RIs, Savings Plans, CUDs) as Your Own: This practice might seem convenient, but it’s important to understand that it doesn't align with cloud provider terms, especially when attempting to transfer vendor-owned commitment into your organization (e.g., Section 5.4.2 in AWS ToS). 3️⃣ - Outsourcing vs. Automation: Don’t confuse outsourcing with true automation. Real automation involves a sophisticated, precise system that operates at scale—not a team of individuals working behind the scenes, prone to human error and bandwidth constraints. 4️⃣ - Quick Fixes for Savings: Quick fixes do exist, but they often come with significant long-term risks. It’s essential to weigh immediate benefits against potential future consequences. Anyone can save the maximum amount of money in the cloud by turning something off completely or committing to the longest term possible with their cloud provider in exchange for savings—both come with significant risks. 5️⃣ - Risk-Free Solutions: There’s no such thing as a risk-free option. If the risk doesn’t fall on you, it falls on your vendor. And you can be sure your vendor will minimize their risk, often limiting your actual savings opportunities. Buybacks, insurance, “[insert vendor] pays your bill”—there’s always a catch. Has anyone dealt with these before? Comment below 👇 .
