How can we make 2023 the year that more neighbourhoods and cities are designed to better support young children, caregivers and pregnant women? Today we’re excited to share the new Proximity of Care Design Guide, a free, online, practical tool #RethinkingOurCities. Developed by Arup and Bernard van Leer Foundation and tested with partners worldwide, the Proximity of Care guide is packed with even more resources, insights and a step-by-step process to help professionals and decision makers embed child and family-friendly design principles into their work. The coming decades will see increasing numbers of children growing up in cities worldwide that are not designed or built around their needs. Together, we can design our neighbourhoods and cities to better support pregnant women, caregivers and help children aged 0-5 reach their full potential. Last week, we hosted the second session of the Proximity of Care Design Guide Masterclass, focusing on Design. We discussed the 10 guiding principles of the Guide, and explored some of the tools available to make the right design choices for impact. We were lucky to have Javier Vergara Petrescu from Ciudad Emergente join us to present how they’ve applied the Proximity of Care tools in the design of their intervention "Valdivia Neighborhood of Care" in Chile. He showcased the power of thoughtful child-focused design in transforming communities. 🌟 Last week we achieved an exciting milestone: we concluded the first session of the Proximity of Care Design Guide Masterclass! 🎉 Over the past weeks, we have run 3 dynamic cohorts, bringing together nearly 150 passionate professionals from all corners of the globe, and representing a wide range of organizations. 🌍 Our first session focused on the theme of "Understand". We explored how the Proximity of Care Design Guide can be used to understand the specific needs and constraints faced by young children, their caregivers, and pregnant women within urban contexts. By examining the interplay between various urban systems and the developmental requirements of children, the session aimed to create a foundation for designing inclusive and nurturing environments. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has attended this first session, for enriching our discussions and learning experience. We look forward to continuing this journey together in August, when we will discover how to make informed design decisions. 📅 Stay tuned for more updates and reflections from our masterclass.
