The brave members of our Armed Forces sacrifice so much to ensure our safety and freedom, and the least our community can do is ensure they have the support they deserve when they return home. Public Law Center helps Veterans like Paul. When Paul came to PLC in 2017, his Disability Insurance benefits had been denied by the Social Security Administration. Paul’s disabilities arose from his service in the U.S. Marine Corps, which included combat during Operation Desert Storm. When his disabilities progressed to the point where he could no longer work, he needed Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits to provide for him and his family. PLC’s Federal Pro Se Clinic and Veterans Advocacy Project jumped in to fight alongside Paul for his rights. Over the next 7+ years, PLC and Paul's journey encompassed a successful federal lawsuit, multiple administrative hearings, and appeals. Finally, in 2024, SSA granted Paul’s claim and awarded him almost $286,000 in past-due benefits. PLC is committed, heart and soul, to our Veteran clients like Paul. Your support is crucial to help ensure we can walk alongside our clients for the long run. Give today to help other Veterans like Paul get the legal support they need to support their life after service https://lnkd.in/g89zYJ7F

Today we have woken up with a new President-Elect. Election results can understandably bring feelings of anxiety and fear for the future, and this year we have seen a particularly divisive election cycle, involving harmful rhetoric that scapegoated the most disadvantaged members of our society. Undocumented folks, people of color, the LGBTQ+ community, and people experiencing homelessness have been particularly targeted both in speeches and in policy proposals. Throughout the campaign period, Public Law Center has been particularly alarmed by policy proposals including the restrictions on health care access for women and LGBTQ+ people, as well as immigration restrictions that are inhumane, illogical, and unproductive. At Public Law Center, our aim is to support the most vulnerable members of our community and guide them through some of the most challenging moments in their lives. Whether they are facing eviction, deportation, fraud, or abuse, Public Law Center is in their corner to uphold their rights and work towards a fair and just outcome. Regardless of who is in office at the federal, state, and local levels, this mission is unchanged. We will continue to fight and advocate for all vulnerable people in Orange County, California by building and growing our strong network of community partners and volunteers. Together, we will continue to stand side-by-side with our clients, and advocate for their needs, safety, and rights at all levels of government and policy. Now more than ever, we ask that you join us on this path and work with us to ensure that every Orange County resident, especially the most vulnerable, may be respected and empowered as they navigate the justice system to keep themselves and their families safe, healthy, housed, and financially secure. You can learn how to join our volunteer team here: https://lnkd.in/g8hkHxQw And how to support PLC here: https://lnkd.in/gRqbeCcu Take care, Monica E. Glicken

October 20-26, 2024 is #ProBonoWeek, and this year's theme is Making Justice a Reality in Our Communities. For over 4 decades, pro bono work has been at the core of Public Law Center's mission to achieve access to justice in our community. Pro Bono week is an opportunity to thank all of our volunteers, without whom we could not achieve our goals, and to raise awareness for the importance of pro bono work. This year for Pro Bono Week, PLC volunteers shared with us why they have committed to helping PLC's clients through their legal practice. If you haven't had a chance to volunteer with PLC yet this year - it's not too late! Sign up now to become a volunteer and receive our monthly case list featuring clients in need of pro bono placement: https://lnkd.in/g8hkHxQw #CelebrateProBono

October is Filipino American Heritage Month, and as a proud first-generation Filipino-American, this month holds special meaning for myself and my family. Last week I was honored to be the recipient of the Community Advocate Award at the Filipino-American Lawyers of Orange County Annual Gala. At the event, I shared the story of my own mother, Elinora Moral Eav, who was a trailblazer in her own right. As a young person in the Philippines, she joined in the protests against government corruption that took place on the campus of her college, the University of Philippines - Diliman. She majored in communications, because she dreamed of becoming a journalist who would shine a spotlight on the plight of the exploited farmers in the rural provinces. She defied the norms and societal expectations of her time to pursue a graduate education, first in the Philippines and eventually in the U.S. She definitely passed on to me her inner fire to make positive change in the world. Another Filipino trailblazer to whom I must pay homage is Larry Itliong, a seminal leader in the workers’ rights movement, who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of Filipino-Americans and other laborers throughout Southern California. Itliong was a farmworker and organizer throughout the 1940s and 50s, who successfully organized a worker’s strike with Filipino and Mexican farm workers. The merging of these two union groups created the United Farm Workers, who brought national attention to farmworkers rights, and ultimately resulted in labor contracts that guaranteed better wages and safer working conditions for farm workers. This month I recognize and honor the Filipino-American community leaders who led the path for me and my colleagues, and I will continue to work and fight so that all newcomers and marginalized communities in Orange County are able to access their rights. - Monica E. Glicken
