October is Filipino American Heritage Month, and as a proud first-generation Filipino-American, this month holds special meaning for myself and my family. Last week I was honored to be the recipient of the Community Advocate Award at the Filipino-American Lawyers of Orange County Annual Gala. At the event, I shared the story of my own mother, Elinora Moral Eav, who was a trailblazer in her own right. As a young person in the Philippines, she joined in the protests against government corruption that took place on the campus of her college, the University of Philippines - Diliman. She majored in communications, because she dreamed of becoming a journalist who would shine a spotlight on the plight of the exploited farmers in the rural provinces. She defied the norms and societal expectations of her time to pursue a graduate education, first in the Philippines and eventually in the U.S. She definitely passed on to me her inner fire to make positive change in the world. Another Filipino trailblazer to whom I must pay homage is Larry Itliong, a seminal leader in the workers’ rights movement, who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of Filipino-Americans and other laborers throughout Southern California. Itliong was a farmworker and organizer throughout the 1940s and 50s, who successfully organized a worker’s strike with Filipino and Mexican farm workers. The merging of these two union groups created the United Farm Workers, who brought national attention to farmworkers rights, and ultimately resulted in labor contracts that guaranteed better wages and safer working conditions for farm workers. This month I recognize and honor the Filipino-American community leaders who led the path for me and my colleagues, and I will continue to work and fight so that all newcomers and marginalized communities in Orange County are able to access their rights. - Monica E. Glicken

Public Law Center is so grateful for the outstanding contributions of our 2024 Summer Law Clerks! The Summer Law Clerk program provides valuable additional support to our legal units, and offers the students exposure to pro bono work to encourage these aspiring attorneys to begin a career in legal aid or incorporate pro bono work as a key component of their practice. Our thanks to all of the students for their hard work this summer, and we wish you all the best as you continue your studies this fall.

We are honored to recognize the University of California, Irvine School of Law Criminal Justice Clinic with our Community Partner of the Year award at the Volunteers For Justice Event. There are extremely few pro bono resources for post-conviction relief in Orange County, and the UCI Law School's Criminal Justice Clinic (CJC), led by Professor Katie Tinto, plays a huge role in filling this access to justice gap. The CJC has a particularly special partnership with PLC's Immigration Unit in assisting human trafficking survivors. Many of these clients become involved with the criminal justice system either directly through the trafficking scheme of which they are a victim, or as an indirect result of the trauma they experienced due to their trafficking. The work of Professor Tinto and her team of students to reopen, overturn, or reduce the convictions of these trafficking survivors is a key step in the healing journey of these clients, and plays an important role in enabling them to create a new, more stable future. We look forward to recognizing their efforts on June 11! Get your tickets here: https://lnkd.in/grkd8FFp
