After two years of research across three continents, 14 cities, and engaging over 350 participants, I am proud to announce the release of my first scholarly research product: "Navigating Trust: Paving the Path to Public Innovation," published through the Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins University This research brief is designed for practitioners committed to fostering innovation in the public sector. Along the journey, I discovered that innovation demands two critical components: risk and vulnerability. But for these to exist, trust is essential—and trustworthiness is the foundation. In this brief, we introduce the Trust Innovation Spectrum, a new model that shifts from a simple continuum (of trust and distrust) to a 180-degree framework, highlighting key attention zones and the optimal zone for fostering public innovation. Trust is not a destination; it’s a dynamic process to be managed. We also convened a panel of innovation leaders from Alcaldía Mayor de Bogotá, The City of Reykjavik, and The Office of the Chief Technology Officer, Government of the District of Columbia, for a practical discussion on the ways that #iteams are boldly producing impact, scaling solutions, and demonstrating a forward-focused model for public service delivery. Last week, the 2024 #SummerScholars Showcase at The Johns Hopkins University brought together #JHU graduate students and the academic and business community to learn about the BCPI Summer Scholars’ experiences and reflections as they presented actionable ideas and solutions to some of the toughest challenges facing cities today, driven by their work embedded in city halls. From reimagining #PublicHealth outreach to driving #ClimateEquity to transforming solid waste collection, participants in the Summer Scholars Program exemplify the future of #PublicSectorInnovation and highlight the diverse possibilities for meaningful and impactful #CityHallCareers. The BCPI Summer Scholars Program offers graduate students at #JHU a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work alongside mayors and senior government leaders while embedded in local government. During the ten-week program, scholars contribute to improving government while applying an array of #PublicInnovation tools like human-centered design, data-driven decision-making, research, and collaboration to enable city leaders to address their most pressing city challenges.
