Massachusetts has immense potential for solar energy and big goals. Yet, getting solar projects through the permitting process has often proved to be slow and meets with quite a bit resistance from the local community. Currently, Massachusetts ranks 49th in energy generation within its borders, heavily relying on natural gas. To meet decarbonization goals by 2050, the state needs 27-34 gigawatts of solar energy, which is over ten times the current capacity. The Department of Energy Resources reports the state has 15-18 times the space needed to meet those goals. Ground-mounted solar has the highest potential, estimating 60 GW could be produced from large scale solar farms. Solar power is one of the most accessible forms of renewable energy. Many companies have integrated solar technology into devices we use in our day-to-day lives. Smartwatches & Fitness Trackers Wearable devices have come a long way in the last few years. Battery storage has improved so much so that Garmin claims some of their watches will last for 11 days, some even longer with the models that use solar power to charge throughout the day. Headphones Urbanista joined the solar power bandwagon, releasing headphones that use solar to stay charged. This is a great option for those who exercise outside - especially distance runners. Imagine never having to worry about your headphones dying in the middle of a long run! Solar-Powered Chargers Outdoor enthusiasts were some of the earliest users of solar power chargers. Early models weren't efficient, but with advancements in technology, they've significantly improved. Drones Drones have become essential for many industries, but many models struggle with poor battery life. Scientist are developing a drone that uses electrostatic propulsion which is a motor that NASA uses. This drone hasn't hit market yet, but once it does it will change the game. Solar powered outdoor lights Outdoor lighting powered by the sun has been around for a bit. Aesthetic and self-expression have expanded into our homes, leading to modernized designs. No matter what style you choose, solar will keep your outdoor spaces well-lit into the night. Smart Bike Locks The Lattis hit the market and has many amazing features. Since it's powered by solar, it doesn't run out of battery. Using Bluetooth, it sends alerts to your phone if it senses someone tampering with the lock or alerts your emergency contact if an accident occurs. Solar power at the Space Station The International Space Station has been using solar arrays since 2009. These arrays are the size of basketball courts and over time have been repaired and updated with new designs and materials. Comment below what solar power devices you want to see hit the market! Paris had a goal for the 2024 Summer Olympics: be more sustainable. Past games have generated some serious emissions. The 2012 London games and the 2016 Rio games had an average carbon footprint of 3.5 million tonnes. On the other end, Tokyo 2021 games had carbon emissions of 1.9 tonnes, making them one of the eco-friendlier games in the past 7 years. From athletes being hesitant about swimming in the Siene, buying mattress toppers for their ecofriendly carboard beds, and leaving the village in search of suitable sustenance (i.e. protein), our nation witnessed how these ecofriendly practices had good intentions, but a few fell flat. There are many ways Paris made sustainable choices that will have lasting effects for the city and the communities within. Throughout the games, they continued to monitor their emissions to check how impactful their practices were. We don't have the final number, but data from Statista forecasts emissions to be around 1.75 tonnes. Only one new structure was constructed for the summer games. The Aquatics Centre was developed with intention to provide a much-needed sporting facility for the community of Seine-Saint-Denis. The Aquatic Centre's 4,680 square foot roof is fitted with solar panels, making it one France's largest rooftop solar installations! Post-games, the interior will transform into two pools, a bouldering area, paddle tennis area, fitness area, and pitches area for team sports. While everything didn't go as smooth in the Athlete Village as one hoped, Paris still implemented a lot of fascinating sustainability technology. A geothermal system was used for heating and cooling while wastewater was reused for things like watering plants. Solar panels were also installed on the carport in coach station and a floating solar farm on River Seine helped cover most of the electricity use in the Village. We hope to see future host cities integrate sustainable practices in their planning! Thank you, Paris, for taking some of the first steps towards integration of sustainability, and congratulations to all of the athletes who competed. We'll see you in Los Angeles, CA for the 2028 Summer Olympics! #Paris2024 #SummerOlympics #sustainabiltiy #solar #PureSkyEnergy
