About us

Race Forward is a national racial justice organization founded in 1981. We envision a vibrant world in which people of all races create, share and enjoy resources and relationships equitably, unleashing individual potential, embracing collective responsibility and generating global prosperity. We strive to be a leading values-driven social justice enterprise where the culture and commitment created by our multi-racial and diverse staff supports individual and organizational excellence and sustainability. Race Forward advances racial justice through research, media and practice. We bring systemic analysis and an innovative approach to complex race issues to help people take effective action toward racial equity. Race Forward publishes the daily news site Colorlines and presents Facing Race, the country’s largest multiracial annual conference focused on racial justice. • Home and land ownership in the U.S. is rooted in racist ideologies that are detrimental to our progress towards racial equity. It manifests itself in today's system where housing is considered a privilege, not a right. Join Race Forward’s Housing and Land Justice initiative for a special Learning Lab. You’ll learn how to adopt racial equity narratives, analyze the root causes of our nation’s housing and land justice, and apply fair housing strategies for collaborating with communities. Join us online, Thursday, April 10! https://lnkd.in/eeKKnShr

  • When we understand our histories of resistance, we strengthen our movements today. Throughout history, women of color have reimagined resistance in ways that transformed movements. Their approaches weren't just responses to oppression – they created new possibilities for everyone. This Women's History Month, we're exploring how their work continues to guide racial justice work today. From organizing domestic workers on city buses to creating citizenship schools that built political power, these leaders showed that the most effective resistance comes through creative reimagining. What woman leader has taught you the most about effective organizing? Let us know in the comments.

    • When the Combahee River Collective showed us that freedom for Black women meant freedom for everyone...
    • When Septima Clark created citizenship schools that turned literacy classes into movement building hubs...
    • When women garment workers in Chinatown created multilingual organizing strategies that brought 20,000 workers together...
    • When Guadalupe Rosales created archives of Chicano/a youth culture as resistance to erasure...
    • When Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera created Star House, providing shelter for young trans people while fighting for broader justice...

  • Race Forward condemns the Trump administration’s firing of approximately half of the Department of Education’s employees. This reckless action to dismantle public education threatens the future of millions of public school students, undermining our educational equity, and endangering critical protections for historically underserved communities. • Public policy has wide implications that affect individuals and communities. However, traditional policymaking often operates in siloes that exclude their most vulnerable constituents. Race Forward’s Policy Innovation Lab aims to disrupt traditional policy development, positioning local communities as owners and decision-makers over policies that directly affect their daily lives. Here’s a look at last year’s working session with our cohort members Food for the Spirit, Philly Thrive, West Atlanta Watershed Alliance (WAWA), and Youth United for Climate Crisis Action. • As narrative practitioners, campaign strategists, and storytellers, we know the power of aligned messaging. But in today's fractured media landscape, coordination matters now more than ever. Just Narratives for Multiracial Solidarity convening will bring together communicators, creatives, media makers, and movement builders to craft powerful narratives of solidarity and liberation. Together, we’ll develop shared frameworks for advancing racial justice. Mark your calendar for November 13–15, 2025, in St. Louis, MO.
