Indigenous people are disproportionately impacted by trafficking due to historical trauma, economic hardship, and geographic isolation, compounded by complex jurisdictional issues. Key points: Indigenous women and girls face a heightened risk of trafficking, often due to poverty, isolation, and lack of resources. The “jurisdictional maze” on tribal lands delays justice, complicating support for survivors. Native-led organizations and culturally sensitive programs are crucial to addressing these challenges and providing real solutions. Our role? Educate ourselves, support Indigenous-led initiatives, and advocate for policies that prioritize Native voices. For one resident, each day at the safehouse has been a stepping stone toward stability and hope. She’s learning skills to support her independence, reconnecting with her sense of self, and finding peace in a supportive environment.
