This week we’re going to give you a few fun facts about the month that lets you know the Holidays are right around the corner and the current year is rapidly coming to an end- October! Unlike our modern 12-month Gregorian calendar, the Romans had a lunar calendar with only ten months each year. While October is the tenth month in our calendar, it was the 8th month to appear on Roman calendars. This is where October gets its name, which translates as ‘the eighth month’ in Latin. Many historical events happened in the month of October. The Statue of Liberty was formally dedicated on October 28th, 1886, by President Grover Cleveland. President Calvin Coolidge declared the Statue of Liberty a national monument on October 15th, 1924. In October 1945, world leaders created the United Nations. They aimed to promote peace and stop future conflicts after the destruction caused by World War II. October also represents the most exciting month on the Major League Baseball schedule as this is when the playoffs begin, culminating in the two best teams playing in the World Series. In fact, the first World Series was played in October 1903. Of course, October is most famous for Halloween. The entire month of October is normally dedicated to preparing for Halloween- by decorating, watching scary movies or participating in various other Halloween-related activities. This week we’re going to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the pioneering late-night television talk show, The Tonight Show! The Tonight Show aired its very first episode on September 27, 1954, on NBC, where it still airs today. The Tonight Show combines a nightly monologue by the host, comedy sketches, musical guests, and celebrity interviews, all permeated by the signature style and persona of the show’s host, thus creating a nightly topical entertainment program with a pop-culture focus. Except for a brief and unpopular switch to a magazine-type news program in 1957, the format of the show has been remarkably consistent throughout its history. The program has had six principal hosts in its history—Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, and Jimmy Fallon. Each host brought his own strengths and talents to the show, but it was during Carson’s run as host that The Tonight Show became the standard for late night talk shows. Carson brought a completely different tone and style from his predecessors, returning the show to its comic roots, and moving it from New York City to Burbank, California while becoming one of the most-beloved figures in American television history during his nearly 30-year tenure as the “king of late night.” During his time as host of The Tonight Show, Johnny Carson helped to kickstart the careers of many of the most well-known comedians including Eddie Murphy, Ellen DeGeneres, Steve Martin, Andy Kaufman, George Carlin, Jim Carrey, Roseanne Barr, Jay Leno, and Jerry Seinfeld, to name a few. Carson’s final episode of The Tonight Show aired on May 22, 1992, with no guests, which was instead a retrospective show taped before an invitation-only studio audience of family, friends, and crew. In 2011, the last Carson Tonight show was ranked No. 10 on the TV Guide Network special, TV's Most Unforgettable Finales. After Carson retired from hosting The Tonight Show, Jay Leno took over as the host amid some controversy, for David Letterman (another well-known comedian, with a late-night show of his own airing on NBC after The Tonight Show) was considered by many (including Carson himself) to be Carson’s natural heir. Disappointed at not being chosen, Letterman left NBC for rival network CBS and received his own late-night show opposite The Tonight Show, called the Late Show with David Letterman, which aired from 1993–2015. Leno hosted The Tonight Show from 1993 until 2009 and returned to host from 2010 to 2014. Jimmy Fallon took over hosting duties in 2014 and has been the host ever since. Tropical Storm Helene formed in the northwestern Caribbean Sea earlier today and, in as little as 48 hours, Helene can go from a tropical storm to a Category 3 major hurricane as it rapidly intensifies over the extremely warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
