A new study by Dynamic Planet and National Geographic Society Pristine Seas reveals we need 190,000 smaller protected areas in coastal regions alone to meet global conservation targets by 2030. Why it matters: This makes the case for the crucial role communities and local governments need to play in achieving 30x30. When given the rights and resources, local communities are the most effective guardians of coastal ocean waters. ⏰ The timing is crucial. As world leaders gather for the United Nations COP16 Colombia next week, this study sends a clear message: To reach global 30x30 goals, we need to prioritize and scale protection of our coastal seas – where the ocean’s highest concentrations of biodiversity intersect with the areas of highest human need. https://lnkd.in/eR8VTrAS

"We're now in 2,000 communities around the world. Those 2,000 communities, when Rare walks away, will continue this work without us. That's the idea. And those 2,000 communities already are moving towards being more adaptive and more resilient to climate change. So that gives me hope." Our CEO Brett Jenks was just on the podcast We Are Not Doomed (by Puddle Creative) with Jonah Geil Neufeld. They talked about: - How behavioral science can drive climate action - Community-led conservation - How private capital can scale environmental solutions - The global challenge of #ClimateMigration Listen now: https://lnkd.in/eyhRY-Jk

FRIDAY: Join Rare’s Carlos Arango at #FinclusionWeek for a discussion on the future of the #BlueEconomy and the 500 million people who depend on it. We'll be diving into the role of inclusive finance in supporting small-scale fishers and why they should be seen as investible — and essential — partners in sustainability: https://lnkd.in/dThKMGRd Our research with the Center for Financial Inclusion (CFI) shows that communities using fisheries management and #FinancialInclusion strategies are better prepared for climate shocks. With Levoca Impact’s help, we’ve also developed a financial model to guide sustainable investment in local fisheries. Together with experts from Rare, Levoca, WTW, and impact stories from our #Coastal500 mayors, we’ll dive into real-world solutions — like bonds and insurance — that integrate the blue economy into the broader #InclusiveFinance agenda. #FIW24

In line with our latest research on American attitudes towards #ElectricVehicles, market research firm Ipsos has found that the share of Americans who believe EVs are better for the environment than gas cars has fallen by 5 percentage points since 2022: https://lnkd.in/ef-p3y_Q NPR reporter Camila Domonoske reported on reasons for the spread of misinformation about #EVs and another factor driving their adoption down: concerns about charging. Our President Caleb McClennen, Ph.D. has experienced that first-hand: https://lnkd.in/esceB4u5 "That first wave of [EV] ownership, they did believe in those environmental benefits, and that was one thing that pushed them towards ownership. This next wave…that's not what's going to push them to ownership. Instead, what's pushing them into ownership is going to be longer ranges, faster charging times, lower costs, better charging infrastructure." —Ipsos researcher Graham Gordon
Our 2024 U.S. Climate Culture Index shows that people are losing confidence both in their personal ability to switch to an electric vehicle and in their belief that switching to an EV is the right thing to do. One of the principal researchers for the Index at Rare, Rakhim Rakhimov, says “We need to build confidence and self-efficacy into the act of owning an EV from the ground up. One of the best ways to do that is to get someone into an EV and try one." For example, Acterra’s community-centered Karl Knapp GoEV Program is designed to increases confidence in driving an electric vehicle by connecting people to multi-lingual educational workshops and EV owners in their community for test drives and free 1:1 consultations. Understanding the psychological barriers to climate-friendly behaviors like purchasing an electric vehicle is critical to the long-term success of climate policies. NEW PODCAST FT. BRETT JENKS: "If you want to save any species on Earth, there's really only one species you have to fully understand, and that's homo sapiens, because we are the cause and therefore we are the solution to just about every #rewilding or #biodiversity or climate concern." On a new Rewilding the World podcast episode, our CEO Brett Jenks talked with Ben Goldsmith about the St. Lucia parrot and how it was saved — in part — by a marketing campaign and how changing the attitudes of ordinary people can have transformative impacts on our shared environment. Listen now: https://lnkd.in/gZTc7_GT
I had a good time talking with Ben Goldsmith on the #Rewilding The World podcast about Rare's history, the power of social norms in sparking sustainable behavior, and why protecting all species on Earth means we only really have to understand one - homo sapiens. (At the very least, give it a listen just to hear me sing (Amazona Versicolor 🎵 🐦 ).

#SustainableFishing isn't new to Palau. It's ingrained in the culture through a traditional practice known as 'Bul.' In the short video below, Kevin Mesebeluu explains how our approach removes barriers to sustainable fisheries management, supports coastal communities, and why it matters — "At the end of the day, we all breathe the same air. We all stay on this tiny bubble as we float through the cosmos." Watch now: https://lnkd.in/eATiUtAp
