World-leading enviro tech company creating solutions to address climate change and food security | SeaFeed™

About us

Sea Forest Limited is a science-based environmental technology company harnessing the power of Australian seaweed Asparagopsis, and replicating its bioactives, to drive sustainable long-term solutions to the challenges of climate change and global food security. The Sea Forest team is dedicated to fighting climate change by being the first in the world to cultivate Asparagopsis at a commercial scale and producing SeaFeed™ livestock supplement. Our scientists have now replicated the bioactives found naturally in this seaweed. Composed of industry’s best scientists, the Sea Forest team is producing the highest methane abating supplement in the world by using the most effective production facilities and methodologies. Sea Forest is now producing more SeaFeed™ than ever, and as our farming, manufacturing and production operations continue to grow, so too will our positive impact on the planet. Sea Forest’s SeaFeed™ supplement is in commercial use with primary producers. The company is also collaborating with major consumer brands to bring products to market and educate consumers. The company’s solution is backed by more than 30 peer reviewed studies and is supported by a network of research partnerships with leading universities. Sea Forest is a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact on sustainability. Through the nonprofit Sea Forest Foundation, we work with the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies at the University of Tasmania to restore Tasmania’s endangered native giant kelp forests.

NEW YORK | Last week was United Nations High-Level Week *AND* Climate Week in NYC! Ambassador Kennedy had the chance to catch up with some superstar climate-fighting friends: 🐠 Tish King from the Torres Strait Islands—who we met through Ocean Decade Australia and Jas Chambers—in NYC repping First Nations communities disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis. 🪸 Environmentalist Sam Elsom of Sea Forest—whom we visited in Tassie last year—is in NYC expanding his genius seaweed-based livestock feed that drastically reduces methane emissions from cattle! 🌊 And Mike Bloomberg, who, through Bloomberg Philanthropies, provides millions of dollars in support of The Earthshot Prize—funding innovators worldwide who will repair our planet! #ClimateWeekNYC

Clean Grow is a lick block that fights climate change. The secret ingredient? Sea Forest's SeaFeed™, which includes asparagopsis – a native seaweed that reduces methane emissions when fed to livestock. Designed by Olsson's Blocks and commissioned by Sea Forest Australia, the project was honoured with the 2024 Michael Bryce Patron’s Award. We're still decompressing after an action-packed Climate Week NYC, but getting to share the stage with Alastair Child, Chief Sustainability Officer at Mars, was a real highlight. Huge thanks to Mars and Alastair for the opportunity to discuss the pivotal role of native Australian seaweed and agriculture in the journey to Net Zero. Lots of uncommon collaborations to come. #ClimateWeekNYC

Food and agriculture are critical ingredients of the journey to Net Zero. Whilst known technology can get us to the halfway mark of 50% reductions by 2030 (yes, Mars has a plan), we also know we need new to world technology to complete the journey, and any acceleration in that new technology will further bend the curve down, knowing that every ton of GHG today is worth ten tons in ten years time. So it was an honor to share the stage here at #ClimateWeekNYC with Sam Elsom, founder and CEO of Sea Forest. What a vision he had in 2018, to start farming seaweed in order to offer feed additives to dairy cows and help reduce their methane emissions. Earth Shot Prize finalist 2023, Fast Company Most Innovative recognition, Mars Unreasonable Food member, Master Diver and more ... Yet a challenge remains - how to scale. We must enter uncommon collaborations, partnerships that make us feel uncomfortable, if business is going to step up to their necessary role in mitigating the climate crisis, if we are going to deliver performance behind our promises. Previously unseen Performance needs previously unknown partnerships. Let´s get to work. #proudlymars

“It has been an incredible journey: we’ve gone from Kate Moss wearing our jeans to us wearing Akubra hats in regional Australia while trying to figure out how to get millions of cows to reduce their methane emissions.” 🐮 💚 Was fabulous to chat with Sea Forest founder and CEO Sam Elsom – who is in the USA for Climate Group's Climate Week NYC – about his journey from sustainability fashion entrepreneur to a Good Design Australia Award Gold for their innovative “Low & Grow” lick block collaboration with Australia’s oldest family-owned and operated sea salt maker Olsson’s. Sea Forest is a true Brand Tasmania champion, creating awesome asparagopsis seaweed-powered products with incredible companies like Olsson Pacific, Grill'd’ burgers, and 4 Pines Brewing Company Pty Ltd, all designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from livestock. Loving your work Sam, truly inspirational! #seaweed #sustainability #startups Story below ↓↓↓

Frocking up for the Good Design Australia awards tonight because our methane-busting lick block won gold in the Engineering Design category! A world-first product, we co-designed 'Clean Grow' with Olsson's Blocks, to allow even the most remote cattle stations to deliver nutritional benefit to their animals, while making a positive contribution to our climate. (For the city slickers, a lick block is basically a muesli bar for livestock). The jury of 80 industry leaders praised Clean Grow commenting: "This product exemplifies how agricultural practices can evolve through smart design and scientific integration to contribute to environmental goals. The incorporation of Asparagopsis extract represents a practical solution to a significant industry challenge. It has the potential to have a profound positive impact on our challenge to reduce methane emissions as we transition to a more sustainable future." Sam Elsom, our CEO, said, "By simply placing Clean Grow lick blocks in the paddock, farmers will be reducing methane emissions. It’s a win-win-win for livestock, the farmer, and the planet. We're proud to have developed the block in partnership with Olsson's Blocks, who have been enthusiastic collaborators. Also, a special shout out Louise Edwards and Rocky de Nys who really drove this project." The Good Design Awards are the benchmark of design excellence in Australia and this year's theme "The Design Effect" has highlighted the role design plays in shaping better products while driving the transition to a more sustainable, less carbon-intensive future. With its roots dating back almost seven decades, the 2024 Good Design Awards highlighted excellence across 12 disciplines, covering more than 32 categories.

Sam Elsom grew up camping and surfing in Australia where he quickly developed a love for the ocean and wildlife. In 2004, he launched one of Australia’s first sustainable apparel houses, which later led him to consulting for companies like Kering and Quiksilver on improving the social and environmental impacts of their supply chains. After reading a 2017 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Sam was inspired to find a way to create larger impact. During this time, he came across research conducted by Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) on feeding a variety of seaweeds to livestock to measure the impact on methane production. One seaweed, Asparagopsis, significantly outperformed the rest with a very small amount resulting in the elimination of almost all emissions. Shortly after this discovery, in 2018, Sam founded Sea Forest, a company that has taken those early findings and brought it to market at scale. Their product, SeaFeed™, is a seaweed-infused feed supplement for all ruminant (animals with four stomachs) livestock. They use both marine and land-based aquaculture to farm the Asparagopsis, and “have the capacity to reduce approximately 10 million tons of CO2e per year from livestock production,” says Sam. While headquarters is located in Tasmania, and Australian farmers have been using SeaFeed since 2020, the company has since expanded to Europe with plans to eventually supply every continent.
