The power of recycling! Rayonier Matariki Forests is proud to contribute to New Zealand's sustainable energy future by supplying pulp logs and log offcuts to a major plant producer for bioenergy. This initiative not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also demonstrates the potential of what would have been forestry waste in driving renewable solutions. Getting a bird's eye view of our forests can greatly improve our ability to safely monitor tree health on a large scale, and drones are a tool that allows us to do that. Not only can we collect information more efficiently, drones provide us with a new perspective that has led to countless benefits and use cases. This isn't just another picture of flowers from our forest! Known for its excellent camouflage, the green lynx spider blends in amongst plant life thanks to its bright green coloring - making it a master hunter that helps control insect populations. We love the variety of species that thrive in our forests. Ever wonder where the inspiration for amusement park log flume rides came from? They're based on old logging practices. This photo from around 1900-1915 shows loggers using streams to move logs from forests to mills in Grays Harbor County, Washington. Our in-house historian Scott Golding explains: "Loggers built temporary dams to float logs. When ready, they opened a sluice to let logs float through the dam, hoping they had enough momentum to reach the river and be towed to the sawmill. Some operations used log flumes, long watertight troughs, to carry logs directly to the mill." Rayonier purchased Polson in the 1940s, and much of the land shown in their historic images is still under our care. Today, loggers use tower logging to lift logs into the air, keeping them and sediment out of the water. Read more about how tower logging works: https://hubs.ly/Q02G3y7d0

An important part of modern forestry is protecting streams, rivers, and lakes. One way we do that is by creating buffer zones along waterways called Streamside Management Zones, which help prevent soil erosion and sedimentation and protect the animals and aquatic life that rely on these water sources. Modern forestry is more than trees. It’s also about being good stewards of the land and contributing to a healthier planet.
