Deborah Leedy, site admin at our distribution center in Redding, California, started volunteering 20 years ago at her local church. Her commitments have since grown into dozens of hours dedicated to multiple organizations each month. For her dedication to education and youth development, Deborah was named one of our 2024 Volunteers of the Year. “Deborah is the embodiment of our Inclusion and Citizenship values,” says Malissa Webber, communications manager and one of Deborah’s Volunteer of the Year nominators. “Her love for her community is apparent in every conversation, and she's an amazing representative as she works across business lines to help Weyerhaeuser show up anywhere we're needed.” Learn more about Deborah's commitment to her community. #TheWeyerhaeuserWay #volunteer https://lnkd.in/gXp-mcDu

In 2007, the Great Coastal Gale, an unprecedented winter storm with winds over 130 miles per hour, killed at least 18 people and caused havoc across the region — including significant damage to many watersheds and fish populations through flooding and landslides. But now, almost two decades later, fish have made a remarkable comeback on our tree farm near Pe Ell, Washington — documented thanks to a 15-year storm recovery study by our aquatics team. “We seldom get the chance to study landscape-altering events like this rare 500-year storm,” says Jason Walter, unit manager of the Western Aquatic Resources team. “What’s more, we had extensive data on fish distributions and stream habitat before the storm, providing a unique opportunity to understand the scope of the storm’s impact and the length of the recovery process to pre-storm conditions.” Learn more about the study and the incredible fish recovery. #TheWeyerhaeuserWay #Science https://lnkd.in/ekisRT_J

For Sathishkumar Nachimuthu, M.Sc., CRL, CMRP, an experience designing and building a racecar prompted him to specialize in reliability and maintenance with a master’s degree in engineering management from the University of Alberta. Reliability continues to stir his passions today as reliability manager at our sawmill in Drayton Valley, Alberta. “My engineering background is crucial to my effectiveness, but the most important element to reliability success is a people-first strategy,” he says. Working forests provide fiber for the lumber, engineered wood and panels that are essential to residential homebuilders and craftspeople. But did you know that using those products actually helps forests remain forests? Read more about the powerful sustainability story of wood products through the eyes of one of our MDF customers — as well as sustainability program manager Katie Cava — in the January issue of FDMC. #TheWeyerhaeuserWay https://lnkd.in/gfMzJ-QY

On this day 125 years ago — January 18, 1900 — Frederick Weyerhaeuser Sr. and 15 associates established Weyerhaeuser Timber Company to purchase 900,000 acres of forestland from the Northern Pacific Railway. It was a bold venture that would reshape the industry through the groundbreaking concept of sustainably managing forests for continual use. Frederick’s founding vision stemmed from firsthand experience in the Midwest, where unchecked logging had depleted forests, ultimately forcing companies to shut down or relocate. He firmly believed his new company would break that pattern. “This is not for us, nor for our children, but for our grandchildren,” he said — words that still guide Weyerhaeuser today. As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, look for more stories throughout the year capturing our history and impact through the decades! #WY125 (Photos courtesy Forest History Society.)

Last year, Weyerhaeuser's Louisiana Timberlands Giving Fund advisory committee, comprised of employees from our Ruston, Winnfield and Hammond area offices, was proud to support the Louisiana Purchase Council of Scouting America. Thanks to contributions from Weyerhaeuser and others, the Scouts are able to expand accessibility for all campers at Camp Attakapas by enlarging the dining hall and adding ADA-compliant restrooms.

Daniel Hanks, an aquatic ecologist for our Southern Timberlands Environmental Research team, certainly wasn’t expecting to find endangered freshwater Alabama pearlshell mussels as he waded through a creek alongside surveyors from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The group was evaluating whether Brushy Creek, which runs through our timberlands, might provide potential habitat for reintroduction of the species. But then a USFWS employee suddenly shouted, “I think I found one!” “I didn’t believe it at first, but sure enough, he was right,” Daniel says. “It had been 30 years since it was last seen in this creek, which is part of its historical range of the Alabama River watershed. This tells us something very important: that we’re doing our part in taking care of this watershed.” Learn more about this find. #TheWeyerhaeuserWay #sustainability https://lnkd.in/ew9f9Yfs
