𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞: Stablecoins – A Look at YTD Growth and Emerging Players This week's chart highlights the strong year-to-date (YTD) growth in stablecoin supply, from both well-established players like USDT (Tether.io) and USDC (Circle), alongside the newer entrants making waves. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘀? Stablecoins are, in my view, one of the most compelling examples of product-market fit within the crypto ecosystem. They essentially function as tokenized money market instruments, given their reserves are typically money market funds, T-Bills, or cash equivalents. Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to maintain a stable value by being pegged to underlying assets, most commonly fiat currencies. The most recognised examples are USDT and USDC , both pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. While similar in nature, they differ in terms of issuers and legal frameworks. 📊 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀: Data from Artemis shows strong YTD growth in stablecoin supply, with levels approaching all-time highs last seen in early 2022. This trend aligns with the broader recovery in the crypto market since the lows of 2023. As stablecoins serve as a crucial liquidity bridge within the digital ecosystem, their demand—and consequently, their supply—tends to rise in tandem with the broader market prices. 🔍 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁: USDT and USDC remain dominant, thanks to their first mover advantage and subsequent deep roots. However, newer entrants like PayPal's PYUSD, Agora's AUSD or Ethena Labs’s USDe are quickly gaining traction. These entrants are not just innovating but are also forming important strategic partnerships with L1s, protocols like Morpho Labs & liquidity providers. In order to meaningfully challenge the incumbents, mastering risk management, having cross-chain interoperability, and ensuring sustained deep liquidity will be key. 🔮 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱: Competition in the stablecoin market is set to heat up with several more set to launch: - Ripple's RLUSD is set to expand Ripple’s influence in the stablecoin arena. - Medad Holding LLC Holdings’ Yieldcoin, developed in collaboration with Franklin Templeton, will have a focus in the Middle East - Tether.io’s new AED stablecoin will tap into the growing demand for digital assets in the UAE. - Sling Money is an example of some of the new products utilising the innovation of stablecoins, to make sending money anywhere in the world as easy and as cheap as sending a text message! Given that Tether.io was more profitable than Goldman Sachs in the final Q of 2023 last year, it’s no wonder why more are coming to market….
