A world where every child is read to every day.
About us
Reach Out and Read is an evidence-based nonprofit organization of medical providers who promote early literacy and school readiness in pediatric exam rooms nationwide by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud. Reach Out and Read builds on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers to develop critical early reading skills in children, beginning at 6 months of age. Reach Out and Read serves more than 4 million children and their families annually. Reach Out and Read families read together more often, and their children enter kindergarten better prepared to succeed, with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills. During the preschool years, children served by Reach Out and Read score three to six months ahead of their non-Reach Out and Read peers on vocabulary tests. These early foundational language skills help start children on a path of success when they enter school.

In the last decade, more grandparents were raising grandchildren than at any other point in American history. On the latest episode of the #RORPodcast, Dr. LaShawnDa Pittman, author of "Grandmothering While Black," talks to Dipesh Navsaria about the complex dynamics — like love, bureaucracy, race, gender, economic inequality — that lead Black grandmothers to lead skipped-generation households. New research highlights the power of Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) in shaping empathy, even in the presence of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). This study underscores the vital role PCEs play in fostering emotional development and empathy traits like empathic concern and perspective-taking. At Reach Out and Read, we know that early positive interactions, like shared reading, can have a lasting impact on a child's emotional well-being. By nurturing these experiences, we help lay the foundation for empathy and understanding that lasts a lifetime. https://lnkd.in/gWm98qG3

"We know that the optimal time to influence a child’s future is actually long before they enter school — and Reach Out and Read’s intervention is designed to support clinicians in offering anticipatory guidance about key developmental milestones, hopefully mitigating potential developmental delays." - Reach Out and Read Carolinas Director Amber Pierce.
The EarlyWell Coalition is focused on policy priorities that strengthen mental health support for infants, toddlers, young children, and families in North Carolina. One of EarlyWell’s priorities is to increase funding for Reach Out and Read, a program that promotes early childhood literacy in pediatric care settings. NC Child interviewed Amber Pierce, NC State Director for Reach Out and Read, to learn more about the program and how it supports infant and child mental health.

Only a third of U.S. babies — and barely a quarter of those in low-income households — are read to every day. This National Nonprofit Day, a gift of any size to Reach Out and Read will empower children nationwide by giving families the tools they need — early language, literacy, and relationships — to build a brighter future through the power of shared reading.

"We see the parents change. They become more sensitive. They follow the lead more of their child. We see the children's attachment is more likely to be secure and organized.”

A new paper from the Academic Pediatric Association shows that children in lower Child Opportunity Index neighborhoods are less likely to attend well-child visits. The findings suggest that removing barriers to health care access “may advance equitable well child care.”
