It’s not every day you get a call saying the CEO of one of your district’s partners is in town for the week and wants to connect. In our brief time together, Tyson Smith shared some valuable insights that have me reflecting on how I approach implementation efforts and considering how to apply business strategies across all of my work, not just our partnership with Reading Horizons. We take pride in showcasing the culture of Duncanville—it's no secret that we embrace being the "City of Champions." We’ll always find a moment for a humble brag and break out into “All I Do Is Win.” But then came a powerful question that left me thinking: What is our culture of teaching reading? How would our teachers and leaders describe our approach? He could have dropped the mic right there! I took that as a personal challenge. 🤣 One key takeaway was the importance of making sure all stakeholders can clearly share our story about striving for literacy for all. In our first year of using Reading Horizons for Tier 3 interventions in primary grades and with students receiving special education services, we had great success, thanks to a grant from Texas Education Agency. A big thank you to Ellie Ingram for coordinating the meeting and Cory Gill (and several others) for your support during the grant writing and implementation year. I look forward to continuing to increase our impact on students facing challenges with learning to read.

One of my first aha moments as a middle school math teacher was realizing that many of my students struggled with math because they struggled to read. As an alternatively certified teacher (I didn’t have any formal teacher education when I started), I was unaware that many middle school students hadn’t yet achieved reading proficiency. Later, in my work at Reading Horizons, I learned the startling reality: two-thirds of American students don’t read proficiently. If you're an upper-grade teacher, I invite you to learn more about how literacy plays a crucial role in student success across all subjects. My colleague Katie Shelton is an expert in this area, and she’s sharing valuable insights in an on-demand webinar that’s available now.
