About us
Real Art Ways is an alternative multidisciplinary arts organization that presents and supports contemporary artists and their work, facilitates the creation of new work, and creatively engages, builds, and informs audiences and communities. Real Art Ways is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that depends on the support of our members and community to continue delivering on our mission of innovative exhibitions and programming. Real Art Ways is committed to artists and to community. We have built a national reputation for supporting innovation and for connecting people with art and ideas. We work with emerging and established artists, and we have a diverse and dynamic audience. All are welcome here. Real Art Ways began in the fall of 1975 when a group of visual artists and musicians took over a rambling upstairs space on Asylum Street in downtown Hartford and created a bare bones salon in which they lived, worked and presented the work of others. Across the country alternative ideas were being explored and developed – and that idea of alternativity to the mainstream remains central to Real Art Ways’ work. Today, Real Art Ways is widely regarded as one of the country’s outstanding contemporary art spaces, one that has a special link with its own community. With films, concerts, performances, readings, exhibitions, and a space where people gather before and after events, Real Art Ways is a unique meeting place for people to come together around art, ideas, and conversation.

You're invited to our public art opening of "No Guns, All Play" - a celebration beginning today (Saturday, August 10) at 11:30 AM at George Day Park, across from the 56 Arbor Street building. Artist Steed Taylor has been busy these last few days, battling the weather and working on his latest road tattoo, which we have commissioned. Walkways in George Day Park have been painted with brightly colored designs and include the participation of neighborhood kids. This design is meant to repurpose public space for art and bring socially engaging art to where kids play and people live. Join our celebration and participate in the unveiling of this latest public art project. Pizza and refreshments will be offered. See you at the park at 11:30! Project made possible by the Love Your Block program from the City of Hartford with additional support from Greater Hartford Arts Council.

You’re invited to High Society: A Conversation about Art and Pharma with Jeff Ostergren and Sarah Fritchey exploring the intertwined history of paint and pharmaceuticals - how it began, where we are today, and how pharmaceutical advertising has aimed at keeping some of us down while getting others high. Evan and I snuck out to see Midas at Real Art Ways this afternoon - so fun!! We highly recommend checking out this movie that was filmed entirely in Hartford! It was awesome to see our city infused in every scene. An extra surprise was meeting writer & director TJ Noel-Sullivan and actor Rob Santos after the show! Thanks for the selfie, gentlemen! ☺️

We've also added a second showtime for each day it will be playing through next Thursday, July 4th - so you'll have plenty of chances to come see it over the weekend or through next week! https://lnkd.in/g_md8PV5 --- Join us Friday, 6/28, in Hartford for a 7 PM opening night screening of MIDAS, followed by a filmmaker Q&A with Director and Writer TJ Noel-Sullivan. TJ was born and raised in Hartford and caught the filmmaking bug after participating in Eye on Video, Real Art Ways' youth summer program. He worked at Mattel Films on blockbuster projects such as BARBIE before returning to his hometown to write and direct MIDAS, his feature film debut. Past directorial efforts include award-winning shorts Role Model and On The Whistle. TJ is a proud graduate of the Hartford Public Schools and received a B.A. in Film and Media Studies from Yale University. We're so proud of his journey and cannot wait to share his film with our community. Make sure to get your tickets before they sell out!
