Our challenges focused on secure software updates and the use of The Update Framework (TUF), with prizes including a new Tesla. Both challenges were conducted on Rivian’s Telematics Control Module. Today MITRE announced the publication of the EMB3D™ Threat Model. The EMB3D™ Threat Model is a result of collaboration that Red Balloon Security participated in with MITRE (Adam Hahn, Jack Cyprus, David Keppler), Niyo Little Thunder Pearson, and Narf Industries (Michael L.). The model, as Yosry Barsoum, Vice President and Director, Center for Securing the Homeland at MITRE said, will help to ensure "...a robust and effective solution to address the evolving challenges in embedded device security": https://lnkd.in/gHfavETP. Red Balloon Security is thrilled to have been able to contribute to the conception, development, and future work with the EMB3D™ Threat Model. We hope that the model can be used by vendors, asset owners/operators, and security researchers as an important resource that collectively defines a new lower-bound for the hardware, software, and development security capability of the devices that underpin our critical infrastructure. About MITRE EMB3D™ MITRE’s EMB3D™ Threat Model for critical infrastructure embedded devices is a novel threat model intended to be used by vendors, asset owners/operators, test organizations, and security researchers as a resource to improve the overall security of embedded devices’ hardware and software.
