RDS celebrates the launch of Sherri Goodman's book: Threat Multiplier: How Climate Change is Impacting National Security.
RDS is extremely proud of Sherri. Sherri Goodman is a name that resonates deeply within the corridors of Washington, the halls of academia, and the circles of environmental advocacy. Her career is a testament to the kind of forward-thinking leadership that the world so desperately needs. With a career spanning over three decades, she has consistently been at the forefront of integrating environmental considerations into national security strategy, long before the broader community recognized the urgency of these issues.
Ms. Goodman’s journey is marked by an impressive array of accomplishments that reflect her commitment to safeguarding our planet and its inhabitants. She served as the first Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Environmental Security, where she pioneered the concept of environmental security as a vital aspect of national defense.
During her tenure, she worked tirelessly to ensure that environmental considerations were integrated into the strategic planning and operational practices of the U.S. Department of Defense. Her efforts have had a lasting impact, setting the stage for a broader understanding of how environmental factors—particularly climate change—are shaping the security landscape in ways we can no longer afford to ignore.
A graduate of Harvard Law School, Ms. Goodman’s academic background is as robust as her professional achievements. She also holds a Master’s degree from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and a Bachelor’s degree in History from Amherst College. Her scholarly pursuits have equipped her with a deep understanding of the complexities of policy-making, particularly at the intersection of environment and security.
In Threat Multiplier, Sherri delves into the multifaceted ways in which climate change is amplifying threats to global security. From the increased frequency of natural disasters that strain military resources to the destabilizing effects of resource scarcity and mass migration, this book offers a comprehensive analysis that is as sobering as it is enlightening. Through rigorous research and compelling case studies, she illustrates how climate change is not merely an environmental issue but a significant factor that exacerbates existing vulnerabilities in our global security architecture.
