Here’s a little peek behind the scenes of archeological monitoring at a project site! Wadaag Commons, a 6-story, 39-unit building aimed at providing affordable housing for large families is receiving federal funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, via the City of Minneapolis, Minneapolis Public Housing Authority, and Minnesota Housing. As part of this funding, we conducted archeological investigation and monitoring at the site. Through stages of careful, controlled excavation, the archaeologists from Nienow Cultural Consultants LLC peeled back soil, pavement, and gravel layers associated with the modern use of the lot and uncovered fascinating remnants of how humans used the site from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. Here are some of the initial findings!
