This past week, Bryn Monahan had the pleasure of leading a workshop on inter- and intra-generational communication for a group of family office executives. The session covered key insights into the communication preferences of different generations, as well as practical skills to enhance overall communication effectiveness. At Relative Solutions, while we are committed to fostering long-term relationships with families, we are equally enthusiastic about sharing our expertise and thought leadership with advisors, executives, and family members. About us
Relative Solutions helps multi-generational family enterprises manage the complex decisions related to their shared assets. We guide families as they move along the continuum from operating businesses to owning and managing multiple assets, where a family’s emotional and financial lives are tied together in pursuit of their common future. Our approach places the interest of the family ownership group first, including understanding each individual family client and their unique capabilities. Using frameworks and tools that are recognized as setting the gold standard for benchmarking family enterprise sustainability and leadership capabilities, we help family members think and act differently in relationship with each other. As a result, they are better able to conduct decision making, improve the management of change, and support an entrepreneurial approach to growing their assets. Our effectiveness with a wide range of families and their enterprises is derived, in part, from an innate understanding of the economic and emotional lives of families along with the inter-generational challenges of differing communication styles, value systems, and work-life dynamics. We believe that the growth of financial assets is inherently tied to the development of a family’s human capital: the intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual aspects of what defines the family.

A few days ago, Family Business Magazine posted an interesting article on the topic of succession. The author shared research by Brown Brothers Harriman that states that while most wealthy families have a succession plan (or are thinking about one), many aren't talking about it with the successors, effectively making #succession a surprise. So, what happens when you aren't prepared to be in partnership with your family members? Rebecca Meyer addresses the topic in her article about "accidental partnerships," or those partnerships you aren't anticipating but are forced into by nature of an estate plan. As both articles share, these partnerships have unique risks, often causing inheritors to feel trapped, unsure how to deal with complicated relationship dynamics, conflicts, and communication. Rebecca shares how to mitigate some of those risks in the article below. If you're feeling unsure about how to prevent accidental partnerships, and instead be more proactive about future family partnerships, please reach out to any member of our team. #familyenterprise #familyoffice #familybusiness #generationalwealth #familygovernance #successionplanning #familysuccession https://lnkd.in/dBGCNBTG

Yes! Prudent article given the potential catastrophic impacts of Milton.
As we navigate the challenges that arise in both business and life, the importance of family resilience becomes ever more apparent—especially in the face of impending storms, such as Hurricane Milton making landfall in Florida today. In their insightful article, Carolyn Greenspon and Rebecca Meyer explore how family enterprises can cultivate resilience to thrive amidst adversity. They share how being accountable, being a contributor, and gathering with your family can result in overcoming obstacles. #familybusiness #familyoffice #generationalwealth #familyresilience #familyenterprise https://lnkd.in/em3EH2Vs

We can't help but think about all that we learned last week at #SEFOF. In particular, we were struck by two of the keynote speakers, Rabbie Steve Leder and James (Jay) Hughes, mentioned the Iroquois Seventh Generation Principle, that "in our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations." What we know from our work with families is that it is often easier said than done. How can we be sure that the decisions we're making will have a positive impact on our future generations? This sentiment is part of the reason we believe it's as important to teach families about #process as it is to help them with #structure. When families can learn to master the process of communication, deliberation, and decision making, they can adjust them as necessary to fit #futuregenerations. Don't know where to start, reach out to us. We'll be happy to help. #familybusiness #familyoffice #familyenterprise #generationalwealth #seventhgenerationprinciple #sustainability

We had a great time serving as an #educationpartner at #SEFOF once again this year. We learned from our fellow colleagues and peers, and enjoyed sharing our knowledge on the power of mentors (Carolyn Greenspon), exploring the meaning of wealth (Jillian Wagenheim), and moving from an single decision maker mindset to a collaborative one (Bryn Monahan). Sincerest thanks to Greg Raabe and Brian Hughes for welcoming us to be a small part of this wonderful organization. Looking forward to next year! #familywealth #familyenterprise #familyoffice #familybusiness #generationalwealth

Today marks the beginning of the court case that will ultimately determine the fate of the voting shares of the Murdoch Family Trust, which has controlling interest in News Corp and Fox News. According to BBC News, "In 1999, the Murdoch Family Trust, which owns the media companies, was supposed to largely settle the succession plans. It led to Mr Murdoch giving his eldest children various jobs within his companies. The trust gives the family eight votes, which it can use to have a say on the board of News Corp and Fox News. Mr Murdoch currently controls four of those votes, with his eldest children being in charge of one each. The trust agreement said that once Mr Murdoch died, his votes would be passed on to his four eldest children equally. However, differences in opinions and political views were said to lead to a family rift. The media mogul stepped down as Fox and News Corp chairman in favour of Lachlan, who reportedly shares the same right-wing views as his father. This has reportedly led to James, Elisabeth and Prudence uniting and "fighting back"." The Murdochs are not unlike many #multigenerationalfamilies where differences of opinion may escalate to arguments, then to conflicts, and can eventually become crises. At the center of our work is understanding the #familyrelationshipsystem, and teaching family members not only to understand their own, but to strengthen it. We help families learn to identify differences and make choices that prevent a crisis from occurring. If this resonates for you, or the families you work with, let us know. We'll be happy to talk and identify the appropriate resources for you. #familyoffice #familyenterprise #familybusiness #generationalwealth #trusts #estateplanning #familywealth https://lnkd.in/eBK6ZCM3

In two weeks, Carolyn Greenspon, Bryn Monahan, and Jillian Wagenheim will be attending, and presenting content, at the Southeastern Family Office Forum (#SEFOF) in Atlanta, GA. Carolyn Greenspon's session focuses on the power of mentors for female leaders in a family enterprise. If waiting two weeks is too long, you can preview her session by reading her article, which initially appeared in Family Business Magazine in 2021. In both the article, and her session, Carolyn details how women leaders can find their strategic voice in their #familyenterprise with the help of strong social connections. #womeninfamilybusiness #familysbusiness #familyoffice #nextgenerationleaders #generationalwealth https://lnkd.in/e3Bwgdyi

We couldn't agree more! #generationalwealth #familyoffice #familybusiness #familyenterprise #moneymessages
Family Enterprise Consultant | Board Member | Thought Leader Specializing in: Family Dynamics, Governance, Education, Future Planning, Board Leadership
*A caveat that the situation is much more complicated than it may seem a first glance. #50Cent and his son have been publicly feuding about this issue for years.* When I see this post, I can't help but think about money messages. 50 Cent worked hard to reach the levels of success he has attained, and he deserves all of it. And yet, somehow his dedication and hard work, from his perspective, didn't translate to his son. Why? #MoneyMessages. The explicit (things we say aloud) and implicit (what our behaviors say about us) messages that we live by, and pass on about money. When the explicit and implicit don't match, the implicit will often win. We may say, "do as I say, not as I do," but humans are wired to mimic others. Especially children. I imagine that 50 Cent's son saw only the "buying" behaviors, and not the work that it took to get there. Additionally, when parents have conflicting money messages, as 50 Cent claims, it can be even more difficult for kids to have a clear sense of their own messages around money. Do you know what your implicit and explicit messages are? Are they the same as the ones your parents and grandparents had, or have you developed your own? Have you discussed what messages you want to pass on to your kids, and come up with a clear plan for how to do so? Many parents come to Relative Solutions, LLC. because they don't want their kids to be entitled. A good first step is getting clear on your own messages. Let me know how I can help! #generationalwealth #familyoffice #familybusiness #familyenterprise
