Last week, the Rental Protection Fund had the privilege of participating in the Canadian Network of Community Land Trusts #CLTSummit in Vancouver, where community housing leaders from across Canada gathered to explore diverse approaches to community-owned land. The Summit was an invaluable opportunity to connect with housing providers and supporters committed to making a difference. Fund CEO, Katie Maslechko presented the Rental Protection Fund's progress and learnings from its first 18 months and offered a sneak peek at new data-driven resources the Fund has developed to support the community housing ecosystem—stay tuned for more on that! Throughout the Summit, we were particularly inspired by all the speakers who shared their experiences and showcased various models for community-owned land from across Canada and beyond. A special thank you to the organizers and all the speakers for their tremendous efforts in making this event a success!

🔦 Investment Advisory Committee Spotlight As part of the application review process, the Rental Protection Fund relies on the expertise of industry leaders who make up its Investment Advisory Committee (IAC). This committee offers valuable advice and guidance that informs the final review of each application. As part of a new series, we’ll be profiling the experts in this group, who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to every acquisition. In the first post, we're shining a spotlight on the exceptional work of Sandra Cawley: Sandra Cawley is a Principal and Regional Leader for Property Tax at Ryan with over 39 years of experience in the field and previously served as the Principal at Burgess Cawley Sullivan. A graduate of UBC with a Bachelor of Commerce in Urban Land Economics, she is considered one of the top professionals in her field. She has been an instructor at both The University of British Columbia and the Urban Development Institute and is recognized as an expert witness by the BC Supreme Court. In addition to her work as a leader in her field, she also sits on the Advisory Board of several companies and a global education institution. Join us in celebrating Sandra and all of the dedicated individuals on our IAC, as we continue our spotlight series in the coming weeks!

➡️ The most affordable housing we have is the housing we've already got. Investments like this secure affordability today and work alongside the creation of new supply.
Building new housing alone won't be enough to address the housing crisis. We also need to support non-profit acquisitions and overdue upgrades that will preserve existing affordable homes. Learn more▶️ https://ow.ly/kHi050TvLAC We recommend these annual targets 👇👇👇

Last week, the Rental Protection Fund was with the #HousingCentral team at the Union of BC Municipalities annual convention. Over the week, we heard from many representatives about safeguarding the affordability that exists today, as well as the need to expand affordable housing in their communities 🤝Local governments have a pivotal role to play in supporting the preservation of affordability. Here are three ways communities across B.C. can collaborate to secure affordable housing: 1. Identify At-Risk Properties: Municipalities have unrivaled local knowledge on where at-risk housing is within their communities. 2. Support acquisitions: Unlock deeper levels of affordability in acquired housing through grants and Property Tax Exemptions. 3. Share Local Data on Real Estate: Empower the Fund and local non-profits in making data-driven decisions on impactful acquisitions. 💡Learn more about the Rental Protection Fund's community housing sector-led approach and how municipalities can get involved. ➡ https://lnkd.in/gDyDPe_E

Sonya's story highlights the real-life impacts of safeguarding the affordable housing that we have today. Thanks to The New Vista Society’s acquisition through the Rental Protection Fund earlier this year, Sonya and her fellow residents no longer have to worry about being forced to leave, knowing their homes are secure for the long term.
“When I found out the building was for sale, panic mode set in.” Like Sonya, many seniors struggle to access affordable rental housing. But there are solutions. As the BC election nears, let's make it a priority to protect affordable housing. Watch video▶️ https://ow.ly/ZWxo50TqmHV Learn more▶️ https://ow.ly/y4TN50TqmHX
