“It felt like our entire world had been turned upside down after my breast cancer diagnosis, and the exciting promises and dreams of our future seemed to vanish. As my husband and I decided to elope and cancel our wedding, we were confronted with another harsh reality of my cancer diagnosis: the uncertainty of having children in the future. During the overwhelming time of numerous doctor’s appointments, I was referred to a fertility clinic. We felt so blessed to have an amazing doctor who explained our options for future children. He gave us hope. He was gentle and kind and delivered our options so sincerely which helped us see clearly for the first time in a week. We decided to quickly move forward with extracting eggs to freeze so that we had options for our future. The process was fast, due to the timing of my chemo, but we were grateful to be able to freeze 5 eggs. Knowing we secured the possibility of more children one day, gave us a sense of hope. Instead of worrying about the “what ifs” of chemo wiping out my eggs, I was able to tackle chemo and think 'one day'. One day, I could possibly have more children from my frozen eggs. One day, I could watch my husband become a dad. One day, my daughter could have brothers or sisters to love. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re honored to share Megan's fertility preservation journey and her decision to trust ReproTech as the long-term cryostorage partner for her precious eggs. Here’s her story. This is Part 1 of a three-part series. "When I was 23, I found out I had the BRCA 1 gene. Due to my family’s history with ovarian and breast cancer, we started breast MRI screenings twice a year. When I was 30, we switched to mammograms. In July of 2021, 2 weeks after my first mammogram came back clear, a painful large lump developed in my left breast. After a few weeks of anticipation, we confirmed I had Triple Negative Stage 3B Breast Cancer. The emotions were overwhelming and came crashing down. Just eight months earlier, I had lost my mother after her second battle with ovarian cancer, and the pain of this new diagnosis weighed heavily on my heart. I was devastated at the thought of my 4-year-old daughter witnessing me go through treatment, remembering how difficult it had been for me to watch my mom endure chemotherapy when I was 15. 🚨During the recent Davis fire near Reno, our NV site remained safe and fully operational. While we were just outside the evacuation and warning zones, we took every precaution to protect the precious specimens in our care, securely stored in our fire-safe vaults. 🔒Our team was onsite throughout and closely monitored the situation.
