Exciting News from Nkwanta North and South Districts! We are thrilled to announce the formation of six peer support groups for individuals affected by skin Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in Nkwanta North and South Districts in the Oti region of Ghana. This initiative, funded by ANESVAD Foundation, comes in response to the high rates of depression and anxiety caused by stigma and discrimination faced by individuals with skin NTDs. The groups, consisting of members ranging from 5 to 70 years old, provide a supportive environment for sharing experiences, emotional and psychological support, and discussing effective coping strategies. Each group is led by a dedicated three-member leadership team, ensuring structured and consistent support. The initial meetings have highlighted several key issues, including the community's high expectations for medical intervention, perceived causes of skin NTDs, and the existing healthcare-seeking behaviours. Additionally, the lack of access to clean drinking water and the need for improved healthcare services were identified as significant challenges. Despite these obstacles, the enthusiasm and hope within the groups are profound. The participants have expressed a strong desire for immediate interventions, regular monitoring, and ongoing community support to improve their quality of life. This initiative represents a significant step towards addressing the mental health and well-being of those affected by skin NTDs in the region. Let's join hands in supporting this vital initiative to improve the lives of our community members. Together, we can make a difference! #SkinNTDs #mentalhealth #ReGIG #ANESVADFoundation
