Unlicensed #gold #mining, also known as "galamsey" in Ghana, is booming as gold prices rise. Although it is providing livelihoods, it is also causing severe environmental damage, health risks, and fueling crime. Miners work in dangerous conditions, using mercury without protective gear. Despite government crackdowns, galamsey still accounts for 40% of the nation's gold output, with most gold smuggled out, limiting revenue gains. Environmental damage includes contaminated water and destroyed cocoa farms. Organized crime is involved, financing equipment and controlling gold sales. Politicians and traditional leaders are also implicated in the trade, complicating efforts to address the issue.
