ZAMBIA'S GOLD RUSH CHAOS When the United Party for National Development (UPND) took office in August 2021, President Hakainde Hichilema made various commitments, one of which was to end illegal gold mining. However, the forthcoming MakanDay investigation reveals that the UPND-led government has allowed illegal activities to persist, despite its pre-election promise to reform the mining sector. MakanDay’s latest two-part report digs into Zambia's gold rush, focusing on Rufunsa district in Lusaka Province where Illegal artisanal miners dominate, extracting gold while facing exploitation from licensed companies like Gold Hunters. Research & Innovation Officer @ Zimbabwe School of Mines | Mining Governance | Mining Law | Public Policy | Artisanal and Small Scale Mining
The crackdown on illegal mining activities, particularly in artisanal and small-scale mining (#asm), is increasingly important due to its significant socio-economic and environmental impacts. There has been several regional issues in the #asm sector and key policy directions that promotes #asm activities. Regional Issues Economic Dependency: Many communities rely on #asm for livelihoods, yet it often operates informally, leading to exploitation and minimal returns for miners. Environmental Concerns: #asm practices frequently result in deforestation, pollution, and habitat destruction, necessitating stricter regulations to mitigate these effects. Policy Direction #Formalization Efforts: Governments are encouraged to formalize #asm through legal frameworks that secure miners' rights and improve access to resources International Standards: Implementing standards like the IRMA Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance Fairmined Initiative OECD Due diligence guidelines can help reduce conflicts and ensure responsible sourcing of minerals. Capacity Building: Providing training and access to affordable equipment can enhance safety and productivity in ASM operations. Zimbabwe School of Mines Official has been championing training for #asm Addressing these issues through comprehensive policies can transform #asm into a more sustainable and equitable sector. https://lnkd.in/d3Smb7bs

Beginning in 2013 the Global Justice Clinic collaborated in solidarity with Kolektif Jistis Min (KJM), a coalition of Haitian social movement organizations that came together to monitor--and then, to resist--the emerging gold mining industry in #Haiti. There is no industrial gold mining in Haiti today in part due to the organized and visible social opposition that KJM and its network mounted, and that organizations and communities sustain. More than ten years into the resistance movement, we share AyitiKanpeMin, this campaign website. https://lnkd.in/eMDdKR-2 AyitiKanpeMin has two main goals: (1) to serve as a repository for activists, organizations, and Haitian people and their allies more broadly. Information is power. (2) to deter investment in Haiti's mining sector. One of the original motivators was to ensure that the opinions and voices of Haitian people come up in any due diligence search of mining in Haiti; to make their organizing and resistance more visible. Gold and governance offer a beacon of hope for Kenya’s artisanal miners. Nestled within the expansive semi-arid savanna of Dabel in northern Kenya, near the border with Ethiopia, lies the impromptu shanty mining settlement of Illo. Emerging within a mere six months since January 2023, Illo now hosts a population exceeding 20,000 individuals from Kenya and neighboring countries. The majority of gold extracted in Illo finds its way into the illegal market in Kenya, with significant quantities being smuggled into Ethiopia through intermediaries for eventual transfer to the Middle East, according to local sources... https://lnkd.in/gJEMrTZ2

Keynote Address: Dr. Hamza Kalu's adds some historical perspective in his keynote address: "From Postal Scams To Email Scams: We Have Come a Long Way Infant Child." Debate: Attend a lively debate between Lady Mariam Abacha and Mr. Godwin Oyathelem. Topic: "The effectiveness of using all UPPERCASE characters."
