Updates from the state of Maharashtra 🌳 A first of its kind consultation workshop on 'Scope of financing in Forest Landscape Restoration' was organised by #RECAP4NDC consortium partner TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute at the #VanBhawan in Pune. The consultation aimed at finding ways and avenues of converging government funds for landscape #restoration within Maharashtra. The workshop was chaired by Shri. Shailesh Tembhurnikar , Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Head of Forest Force) and Smt. Shomita Biswas, Chief Executive Officer, Maharashtra Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management & Planning Authority (Maha #CAMPA). Key participants involved officials from the State Forest Department of Maharashtra, senior officials from the NABARD - National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, other state departments such as #agriculture, #horticulture, #tribal welfare, #rural development as well as Civil Society Organisations. Deep in Maharashtra’s #Talmachi region, amid dense jungles, a remarkable story is unfolding. The Applied Environmental Research Foundation is teaming up with tribal communities — helping them harvest #Haritaki and #Pongamia sustainably, as well as process and market the produce. With multiple certifications from the FSSAI Home and FairWild Foundation etc., local producers get fairer prices, strengthening their economic standing and collective responsibility towards forests. 🌳 🍃 But AERF’s most inspiring innovation in Talmachi is not the economic network – it’s a unique Haritaki processing facility built from #bamboo. From the compressed wall panels to the rooftop, the complex structure stands tall and strong, weathering the elements year after year, a 100% carbon-neutral building that embodies the very essence of AERF’s work – minimising environmental footprint by empowering the traditional ingenuity of our forest-based communities. The knowledge of treating bamboo for increased durability, a practice passed down through generations, has now become a shining example of a potential – a new, scalable value-chain. Previously sold untreated, the bamboo is now treated pre-market, creating termite-resistant poles that sell at a much higher price. Thus, communities now enjoy enhanced income from a variety of sustainably processed forest produce, which also includes bamboo. It’s a powerful symbol – a community rising above its circumstances, quite literally, within the strong embrace of a bamboo-built haven. This example isn’t just about reviving a forest; it’s about reviving a way of life – when tradition, innovation, and community came together to create a future that’s not just sustainable, but truly thriving. 🌱 #RECAP4NDC celebrates these stories of success and aims to bring more such remarkable tales of India’s forests and its people. IUFRO - International Union of Forest Research Organizations is one of the most widespread organisations in the field of forestry. RECAP4NDC team attended the 26th IUFRO World Congress which was held in Stockholm, Sweden last week. 🌳 The World Congress began with a ceremonial tree #plantation of two Oak trees (Qurcues rober), an auspicious and traditionally important species, by the President of IUFRO, Dr. John A. Parrotta and other eminent colleagues. The plantation of symbolised hope of a successful Congress and further foster long life collaborations, same as how the roots of the two trees will grow together and support each other. 🌱 🍃 His Majesty, the King of Sweden inaugurated the IUFRO World Congress. In his speech, he specifically highlighted the importance of forests in Swedish #tradition and focused on the importance of #research in forestry and its role in climate change #mitigation. 🍃Representatives of the Student of Forestry Union of Sweden emphasised the significance of forestry by observing how their elders are shaping the world, which future generations will evaluate. They also highlighted a unique perspective on the proverb "you reap what you sow," suggesting that in forestry, people benefit from the efforts of previous generations, reaping what their grandfathers sowed. 🍃 During the course of the Congress, multiple sessions covered various important aspects of #restoration such as strategies to #conserve forest, innovative #monitoring techniques of restoration with a special focus on challenges such as #forestfire and #degradation. 🍃 A book titled ‘Human Dimensions of #Forest #Landscape #Restoration (FLR)’ by Stephanie Mansourian and team was launched. The book tries to understand the diversity of ways in which #humandimensions and FLR interrelate; identify and understand important interventions in the human system that can facilitate FLR; and provide relevant guidance to assist practitioners to #integrate these human dimensions in #FLR. 📓 🍃 An excursion visit was organised by the entity Stora Enso wherein a unique approach of forestry in Sweden was demonstrated. This approach focusses more on production and #balancing #ecology as well #biodiversity, maximum usage and #zerowaste policy. RECAP4NDC Updates from the state of #Uttarakhand 🍂 The RECAP4NDC team is undertaking a participatory approach assessment for selecting intervention landscapes for implementing Forest Landscape Restoration (#FLR) initiatives in Uttarakhand. In the #Kumaon region, the team has interacted with women from the local community, heads of #VanPanchayats, front line staff of the forest department of Uttarakhand as well as senior government officials like the District Magistrate, Chief Conservators of Forest (CCFs), Conservators of Forest (CFs) and Divisional Forest Officers (DFOs). This participatory approach is based on the Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (#ROAM) tool developed by the World Resources Institute and IUCN which involves a spatial analysis to map out degraded landscapes, followed by stakeholder consultations for a final selection of intervention landscapes in the state of Uttarakhand.
