Walking through the roads of #Delhi we often encounter the forests of Delhi that are full of resilient #Kikar tree, also known as #Prosopisjuliflora. This tree, with its thorny branches and hardy nature, tells a tale of both challenge and adaptation in the heart of India’s capital. Introduced by the British in the 1930s, the Kikar tree was initially brought to Delhi for its ability to #thrive in #arid conditions and provide quick green cover. Over the decades, it has spread extensively, particularly in the Delhi Ridge, an area once rich with native flora. Today, the Kikar tree dominates this landscape, its deep roots #depleting groundwater, its #dense canopy making it difficult for other species to flourish and its ability to release #biochemicals in the soil eliminating native flora. However, the story of the Kikar tree is not just one of invasion. It also highlights the innovative efforts to restore ecological balance. In recent years, the Delhi government has embarked on a project to reduce the dominance of the Kikar tree in the Central and Southern Ridge. Using techniques like #canopylifting, where the top branches are #pruned to allow sunlight to reach the ground, native species are being reintroduced to the area. This method has shown promising results, with native trees like hingot, banyan, and amaltas beginning to thrive once more. The presence of Kikar in Delhi serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between introduced species and #native ecosystems. While it has posed significant challenges, it has also spurred innovative solutions aimed at enhancing #biodiversity. The efforts to manage the Kikar tree and reintroduce native species are crucial steps towards creating a more balanced and resilient #urban forest. 🌲 To know more, read Chapter 4 of the "Delhi's forest at a Glance" https://lnkd.in/gwQpst8d In conclusion, the tale of the Kikar in Delhi is a testament to the resilience of nature and the importance of thoughtful ecological management. It underscores the need for continuous efforts to protect and restore native ecosystems, ensuring that urban landscapes remain vibrant and diverse for future generations. Have you ever seen the Kikar trees in Delhi? What are your thoughts on the efforts to manage its spread and restore native species? Restore, Conserve and Protect Forest and Tree Cover for NDC Implementation in India
About us
RECAP4NDC focusses on restoring degraded and deforested landscapes and enhancing livelihoods of farmers and forest dependent communities in India. The project is carrying out activities in three Indian states, namely Maharashtra, Gujarat and Uttarakhand, and the region of Delhi & NCR. RECAP4NDC contributes to the Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) on Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) between India and Germany signed in May 2022. The JDI aims to deepen the cooperation between both countries to achieve the Bonn Challenge, a global commitment to bring 350 million hectares of degraded and deforested landscapes into restoration by 2030. FLR is a paradigm shift in sustainable forestry, since it recognises the intricate relationship between forests and society by finding ways in which degraded environments can recover their health while at the same time contributing to people’s wellbeing. REACP4NDC is an Indo-German project funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Government, with direct commissioning by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and jointly implemented with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India. The project is being implemented by a 6-member consortium comprising Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH as the consortium lead, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) India, the Forest Survey of India (FSI), The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), the Indian Council for Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD).

The Deceptive Beauty of #Lantana: A tale from Uttarakhand's hills 🌸 Imagine strolling through the lush forests of Uttarakhand, your eyes drawn to clusters of vibrant pink and yellow flowers dotting the landscape. While these blooms might seem picturesque, they belong to a hidden #menace: Lantana camara, an #invasive plant that has wreaked havoc on India's forest ecosystems and forest-dependent communities. Introduced to India in the early 1800s as an ornamental species, Lantana has, in less than two centuries, transformed into one of the world's top 10 most invasive plants. Over time, it has spread across open areas along #roadsides, #railway tracks, the #edges of crop fields, and open #forests across the country. Today, Lantana is fully naturalised throughout India, having invaded around 13.2 million hectares of pasture lands, as well as forest and fallow areas. (1) Its presence in Uttarakhand's hills serves as a microcosm of its wider impact. Lantana's invasive nature extends far beyond simple competition with native flora. Its dense growth creates ideal cover for #predators such as leopards, intensifying #conflicts with local #communities. #Forest #dependent communities find their #livestock increasingly #vulnerable, leading to economic hardships and strained relationships with local wildlife. In a desperate bid to manage this threat, some farmers resort to #burning Lantana thickets. This solution is rife with risks, with the potential to lead to #uncontrolled fires that threaten adjacent natural vegetation and forests. The plant's resilience is both impressive and alarming. It #outcompetes native flora, forming dense monocultures that alter entire ecosystems. Yet, hope persists. Innovators see opportunity in adversity, with startups coming up with Lantana based durable #furniture, similar to bamboo and cane products. (2) While eradication seems unlikely, such initiatives could mitigate its impact and provide economic opportunities for local communities. Have you ever used Lantana furniture? Do share what it’s like. Moreover, share your #insights about Lantana, or any successful strategies or innovative approaches being implemented in your region to deal with this menace. 💡Soil Erosion in Gujarat #Soilerosion is one of the most serious environmental concerns affecting all natural and human-managed ecosystems. With nearly 16% of its total geographical area being degraded, #Gujarat has fourth highest area under land degradation in the country. According to the ICAR- Indian Council of Agricultural Research, nearly 83% area across Gujarat has erosion rates of more than 10 tonne hectare/year. It is mainly due to excessive #deforestation, extension of #ravine lands along the major river system, #overgrazing and #injudicious land use practices. Land degradation due to soil erosion impacts the livelihoods of millions of people: 🍃 Reduced agricultural productivity: Topsoil is the lifeblood of agriculture, rich in nutrients and organic matter. Erosion removes these vital elements, leading to decreased crop yields. 🍃Ravine formation: Heavy monsoon rains carve fertile land into deep ravines, rendering it unusable. 🍃Water scarcity: Erosion disrupts natural drainage patterns, leading to increased surface runoff and flash floods. Furthermore, the lost topsoil reduces the land's capacity to retain water, exacerbating water scarcity during dry seasons. 🍃Biodiversity loss: Erosion disrupts ecosystems, destroying habitats and leading to a decline in plant and animal life. This can have cascading effects throughout the food chain. Addressing the crisis of land degradation due to soil erosion requires a multi-pronged approach including identifying and spreading awareness about the reasons for soil erosion and the remedial measures. ‘Restore, Conserve and Protect Forest and Tree Cover for NDC Implementation in India (#RECAP4NDC)’ envisages not only restoring degraded and deforested landscapes but also enhance livelihoods of farmers and forest dependent communities, conserving biodiversity and improving the flow of ecosystem services.
