Our mission is to empower lives by restoring vision for millions of people in need.

About us

THE PROBLEM: Over 1 billion people worldwide have a vision impairment that could have been prevented or is yet to be addressed, and 81% — 826 million people — only need reading glasses to correct their sight. 90% live in low and middle-income countries and cannot access or afford the glasses they need to see clearly. People as early as age 35 are dropping out of the workforce due to presbyopia and being driven deeper into poverty for this reason: a lack of access to reading glasses. WHY RESTORINGVISION? RestoringVision is a leading global nonprofit dedicated to creating equitable access to vision services and eyeglasses for people living on less than $2 a day worldwide. Since 2003, RestoringVision’s interventions have transformed the lives of 28M people in need worldwide. In 2024 alone, RestoringVision’s programs will reach 5.5 million people living in poverty. RestoringVision’s proven programs are implemented in partnership with over 3,000 NGO and government partners, as the organization also serves as a leading voice and advocate for the global prioritization of eye health at the level of the United Nations and World Health Organization. WHERE WE WORK | OUR IMPACT RestoringVision works globally, and is scaling its programs in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Our programs unlock pathways to livelihoods, education, poverty alleviation and economic development, and health and well-being with clear vision and eyeglasses for people with presbyopia. From practice to policy, our cost-effective and life-changing programs are supporting the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

👓✨ We’re excited to share some incredible moments showcasing the impact of glasses in Ethiopia! During a recent medical mission conducted by Operation Ethiopia, countless individuals had their vision screened and received glasses, allowing them to see clearly for the first time in years. These powerful photos capture the joy and transformation that comes when vision is restored. Our work in Ethiopia is about more than just glasses—it’s about opening up new opportunities for education, work, and daily life. Clear vision empowers individuals to unlock their full potential, and we're proud to be making that possible in communities that need it most. 👓✨ This #LaborDay, we celebrate the incredible power of clear vision and its impact on work and livelihoods. Meet Oscar and his wife from Guatemala, who once shared a single pair of glasses to combat sight loss. Without access to proper vision care, their ability to work and earn a living was affected. Thanks to RestoringVision’s program in Guatemala, they now have personalized glasses that have improved their ability to work. Clear vision is essential to productivity and sustaining livelihoods—whether you're a writer, artist, knitter, or tailor, the ability to see clearly impacts the love of labor we all cherish. A study published by Lancet Global Health shows that restoring vision with corrective eyeglasses can increase productivity by up to 32%, leading to an increase in income by up to 20%. Globally, this means the potential to change lives and lift families out of poverty. This Labor Day, let’s remember that equitable access to vision services and eyeglasses is a key that unlocks the joy of work and a fulfilled purpose for people around the world. 🌍💼 #LaborDay #RestoringVision #ClearVision #EmpowermentThroughVision #GlobalImpact

For years, worsening eyesight meant Mathewos Alaro struggled to read and teach--keeping him from fulfilling his work as a religious leader in his community in Ethiopia. But after being screened for vision problems by a community health worker trained through Last Mile Health's new non-communicable disease training module, and fitted with glasses from RestoringVision, Mathewos can read easily again. "These eyeglasses have given me back my purpose," he says.

👁️✨ August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month! ✨👁️ For many children, 80% of what they learn happens through their vision. Myopia, often diagnosed between 8 and 12 years of age, can significantly impact a child’s ability to succeed in school. Research shows that correcting myopia and poor vision in children dramatically improves educational outcomes. In the communities we reach, this means children are more likely to stay in school and succeed—helping to break the cycle of inadequate education and poverty. By providing access to vision care, we’re making a lasting impact on children's futures, one pair of glasses at a time. Let's prioritize children's eye health to ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive! 👓📚 #ChildrensEyeHealth #RestoringVision #MyopiaAwareness #ClearVision #BrightFutures

Today is Women's Equality Day! Women's Equality Day reminds us of the progress made toward gender equality. It also highlights the ongoing need to address disparities and ensure equal opportunities for women in all areas of society.   One often overlooked issue is the global inequality in women's access to vision care. Did you know that women are more likely to suffer from vision impairment than men? And yet, women often face greater barriers to accessing the eye care they need. Whether due to social, economic, or cultural factors, this gap leaves millions of women unable to see clearly and unlock their full potential. At RestoringVision, we are committed to closing this gap. The ability to see plays a critical role in so many facets of our lives, including being able to read and engage in the voting process. When we support women, we lift countries out of poverty, we strengthen our economies, and we make the world a more equal and just place. Ensuring women have access to the vision services and eyeglasses they need and the ability to have a voice and vote are critical steps towards this.   We are proud to be a female-led organization and we are proud of the women who serve in our organization! Every step they take forward is changing the trajectory for girls and women for generations to come!! #WomensEqualityDay #RestoringVision #GenderEquality #VisionCare #EmpowerWomen #FemaleLedOrganization #VisionAccessForAll
