Our mission is to empower lives by restoring vision for millions of people in need.

About us

THE PROBLEM: Over 1 billion people worldwide have a vision impairment that could have been prevented or is yet to be addressed, and 81% — 826 million people — only need reading glasses to correct their sight. 90% live in low and middle-income countries and cannot access or afford the glasses they need to see clearly. People as early as age 35 are dropping out of the workforce due to presbyopia and being driven deeper into poverty for this reason: a lack of access to reading glasses. WHY RESTORINGVISION? RestoringVision is a leading global nonprofit dedicated to creating equitable access to vision services and eyeglasses for people living on less than $2 a day worldwide. Since 2003, RestoringVision’s interventions have transformed the lives of 28M people in need worldwide. In 2024 alone, RestoringVision’s programs will reach 5.5 million people living in poverty. RestoringVision’s proven programs are implemented in partnership with over 3,000 NGO and government partners, as the organization also serves as a leading voice and advocate for the global prioritization of eye health at the level of the United Nations and World Health Organization. WHERE WE WORK | OUR IMPACT RestoringVision works globally, and is scaling its programs in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Our programs unlock pathways to livelihoods, education, poverty alleviation and economic development, and health and well-being with clear vision and eyeglasses for people with presbyopia. From practice to policy, our cost-effective and life-changing programs are supporting the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

🌍 On this #InternationalDayfortheEradicationofPoverty, we celebrate the inspiring story of Marta from Guatemala, a skilled seamstress who faced challenges in supporting her family due to poor vision. Without access to proper eyeglasses, Marta struggled to work alongside her husband and contribute to their household income. With the eyeglasses she recieved from RestoringVision, Marta regained her ability to see clearly and returned to her craft. Now, she works as a seamstress alongside her husband, doubling their earning potential and helping to lift her family out of poverty. ✨ At RestoringVision, we are proud to align with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1 – No Poverty. By providing individuals like Marta with the vision care they need, we are empowering people to regain independence, earn a livelihood, and break the cycle of poverty. #EndPoverty #SDG1 #VisionForChange #RestoringVision #EmpowermentThroughVision #GlobalImpact #NoPoverty #VisionForAll

Today, on #IndigenousPeoplesDay we celebrate the rich cultures and contributions of Indigenous communities across the United States. Since launching our collaborative program with Walking Shield, Inc. in 2022, we have provided critical vision services and eyeglasses to thousands of Native Americans across 10 reservations, tribes, and organizations. By implementing our services through existing health facilities, we are directly addressing the pressing need for access to vision care in these underserved communities. This partnership reflects our commitment to translating empathy into action, ensuring that Indigenous peoples have the tools they need to thrive. Together, we are proud to have made strides toward improving education opportunities, productivity, and overall well-being for Native Americans across the country. Let’s continue to honor and support Indigenous communities today and every day! 👁️❤️

We are so grateful to David Reitnauer and the team at Walmart for ten years of teamwork and incredible support! During the first year of our collaboration, the people in need whom we reached through the distribution of eyeglasses from their donated warehouse facilities grew from 450,000 people to 2.5 million people. Since then, with their support, we have reached 28 million people in 150 countries with the gift of clear sight, transforming lives and livelihoods. What a wonderful milestone to celebrate on #worldsightday! #wsd #anniversary #clearvision #loveyoureyes #teamwork

VP, Health & Wellness - Optical at Walmart

Celebrating World Sight Day! I just wrapped up a trip to our Optical Distribution Center in Lockbourne, Ohio. It was an opportunity to connect with our team there, doing a fantastic job delivering for our customers. It was also an opportunity to celebrate 10 years of teamwork with RestoringVision, a nonprofit working to address the global vision crisis by creating channels for eyeglasses and services to reach people who need them most, all around the world. Since 2014, it’s been our honor to donate over 40,000 square feet of space to RestoringVision at this facility to house some of its operations.    And, how fitting on World Sight Day (Oct. 10), we get to celebrate this wonderful mission of serving others, together. Thank you, Pelin Munis, Ph.D., for leading this important work.

👓✨ Happy World Sight Day! At RestoringVision, we believe glasses are more than just a tool for clearer vision—they’re a gateway to a brighter future. Clear vision empowers children to learn, helps adults work productively, and promotes independence and well-being. Today, as you put on your eyeglasses, remember that millions of people worldwide lack access to this basic tool. For many, not having glasses means being trapped in a cycle of poverty. By providing glasses, we’re not just improving sight; we’re unlocking opportunities for education, economic growth, and a better quality of life. Let’s all prioritize our eye health and advocate for accessible vision care for everyone. Join us in spreading the message that everyone deserves the gift of sight! 👓✨ We’re excited to share some incredible moments showcasing the impact of glasses in Ethiopia! During a recent medical mission conducted by Operation Ethiopia, countless individuals had their vision screened and received glasses, allowing them to see clearly for the first time in years. These powerful photos capture the joy and transformation that comes when vision is restored. Our work in Ethiopia is about more than just glasses—it’s about opening up new opportunities for education, work, and daily life. Clear vision empowers individuals to unlock their full potential, and we're proud to be making that possible in communities that need it most. 👓✨ This #LaborDay, we celebrate the incredible power of clear vision and its impact on work and livelihoods. Meet Oscar and his wife from Guatemala, who once shared a single pair of glasses to combat sight loss. Without access to proper vision care, their ability to work and earn a living was affected. Thanks to RestoringVision’s program in Guatemala, they now have personalized glasses that have improved their ability to work. Clear vision is essential to productivity and sustaining livelihoods—whether you're a writer, artist, knitter, or tailor, the ability to see clearly impacts the love of labor we all cherish. A study published by Lancet Global Health shows that restoring vision with corrective eyeglasses can increase productivity by up to 32%, leading to an increase in income by up to 20%. Globally, this means the potential to change lives and lift families out of poverty. This Labor Day, let’s remember that equitable access to vision services and eyeglasses is a key that unlocks the joy of work and a fulfilled purpose for people around the world. 🌍💼 #LaborDay #RestoringVision #ClearVision #EmpowermentThroughVision #GlobalImpact

For years, worsening eyesight meant Mathewos Alaro struggled to read and teach--keeping him from fulfilling his work as a religious leader in his community in Ethiopia. But after being screened for vision problems by a community health worker trained through Last Mile Health's new non-communicable disease training module, and fitted with glasses from RestoringVision, Mathewos can read easily again. "These eyeglasses have given me back my purpose," he says.
