  • This month's Educational Symposium for Rural Emergency Hospitals, was an insightful event focused on enhancing observation care practices in REHs. The symposium offered in-depth discussions on regulatory requirements, strategies for process improvement, and the identification of barriers to effective observation care. Participants delved into the elements of observation documentation and developed comprehensive strategies for improving care for observation patients. The event brought together a wide range of REH healthcare professionals, including Nurse Executives, Quality Personnel, Case Management/Discharge Planning Personnel, Emergency Department Nurse Leaders, and Emergency Department Medical Directors, fostering the exchange of ideas and best practices. Our Education Symposiums create valuable opportunities for professional development and networking, providing participants with the tools and knowledge to enhance their processes. If you represent an REH and are interested in participating in our Peer Network to take advantage of this ongoing support, contact REHSupport@rhrco.org. #RuralHealth #REH #ObservationCare #ProfessionalDevelopment

  • Since 2023, our team leading the Rural Northern Border Region Technical Assistance Center has been working with the Vermont Association of Hospitals and Health Systems (VAHHS) to help thirteen of their rural hospitals explore value-based care, leveraging our lessons learned through the PA Rural Health Model. Program Director, Tom Harlow, recently participated in the VAHHS Board Retreat where he had the opportunity to interact with the leadership of these hospitals, including Bob Ortmyer, CEO of Porter Medical Center (VT) and Elizabethtown Community Hospital (NY). This is just one of 34 projects initiated by our NBR team. These projects involve 31 healthcare organizations and span several rural counties in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and northern New York. In September 2023, our center was honored with a one-year supplemental award from the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (FORHP), in collaboration with the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC). This funding was distributed to seven organizations across Maine, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont, aimed at supporting innovative projects designed to enhance healthcare services for rural residents in these states. Over the past year, these selected projects have tackled pressing healthcare issues including opioid use disorder (OUD) and substance use disorder (SUD), leadership development, food insecurity, pediatric oral health, mobile integrated care, health equity, and access to primary care. One of the overarching goals of this supplemental funding has been to develop projects capable of creating best practices and scalable solutions that can be applied to other rural communities in the Northern Border Region and beyond. We are excited to showcase the remarkable work accomplished through these projects. This webinar will highlight the innovative strategies and impactful outcomes achieved by each project, offering valuable insights and practical solutions for enhancing rural healthcare. Don't miss this opportunity to learn about the transformative initiatives making a difference in rural healthcare and discover how these best practices may be scaled and implemented in your own communities. Who Should Attend: Healthcare professionals, policymakers, community leaders, and anyone interested in rural healthcare innovation and development. This program is funded by the Northern Border Region Technical Assistance Center (NBR-TAC), through a cooperative agreement with Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC).
