Last week, Nafisa and I of Rice Innovation attended Engine Ventures Tough Tech Summit, an annual gathering of the leading minds in science and technology, entrepreneurship, venture and policy. The conference showcased the global impact of leading edge scientific discovery, ranging from energy, climate, and the built environment, through the impact of biology not only in healthcare and biotech, but in heavy industry, and the impact of AI across all industries. An encouraging showing of the investment of scientific and business minds, of time and capital to use science to solve global issues. It was great seeing the strong Rice University representation as both investors and entrepreneurs, and meeting friends old and new across corporate innovators, capital providers and founders. Ahead of the starting line for the 2024 U.S. Grand Prix in Texas, the AMR22 racecar zoomed through Houston with a demonstration run. The Aston Martin F1 Team hosted interactive activities and a panel discussion here at the Ion on the culture of innovation fostered by the partnership with aramco. Celebrating the launch of the Generation 3—a campaign that leverages cutting-edge technologies to deliver real-world impact and inspire the next generation—it was exciting to witness innovation taking shape. This included an up-close view of the car and meeting 19-year-old driver Jak Crawford during the demo run. Houston Mayor Whitmire explained during the event, "Institutions like Rice University and the Ion make Houston great. This is really a great day for Houston and all of the attendees here."
