Compassion Unleashed
About us
The Richmond SPCA, founded in 1891, is a non-profit, no-kill humane organization dedicated to the principle that every life is precious. The Richmond SPCA is a national leader in humane care and education, having developed numerous lifesaving programs and services including those dedicated to adoption, rehabilitation, sterilization and education. We save the lives of 4,000 homeless animals each year and care for about 350 cats and dogs daily. The Richmond SPCA is not affiliated with any other private animal welfare organization or SPCA but we regularly transfer pets from local municipal agencies into our care so that they may receive lifesaving treatment and be adopted to loving new homes.

Happy LVT week to all of our incredible licensed veterinary technicians! Today and every day we are cheering on the wonderful technicians at the Richmond SPCA who dedicate their time to help pets in need at our humane center, Smoky's and our Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital. Big shout out to our licensed staff — Katie, Mary, Crystal, Jessie, Nicole, Suzie and Amanda — and to our student technicians Austin, Leesy, Caitlin and Tanner. If you see an LVT this week, be sure to thank them!

FREE VACCINE CLINIC! 🚨 Due to an increase in canine parvovirus cases in Richmond and the surrounding counties, we are partnering with Richmond Animal Care and Control to hold a free vaccine clinic for dogs on Monday, October 14 from 3 to 6 p.m. Parvo and distemper vaccines (DAPPv) will generously be provided by Petco Love, and rabies vaccines will be courtesy of RACC. This will be a drive-up clinic in our volunteer parking lot off of Rhoadmiller Street. All dogs are welcome to attend. We’ll have 200 vaccines, which will be available first come, first served. All dogs must have a leash and collar and will remain inside the vehicle.

We had another great week of adoptions! Last week, 80 pets found loving, lasting homes including long-term pets like Symphony and Bitsy. Congratulations to our newest alumni and their guardians! If you've been thinking about adding a furry friend to your family, now is the pawfect time! October is #SubaruLovesPets month, and adoption fees for all adult dogs are discounted by 25% for the whole month. But for the next three days, we're waiving dog adoption fees altogether! Visit us on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday to take home an adult dog and you'll be helping us respond to urgent pleas from partner shelters. Make room to save a life! #adoptrva

Our volunteers recently took Humphrey to Richmond Ambulance Authority as part of our Paws for Paramedics program! The program is designed to help EMS providers relieve stress through regular interaction with pets who are awaiting adoption. Frequent exposure to traumatic events can lead to high levels of workplace stress for these providers, and RAA recognized the positive impact that pets from the neighboring animal welfare organization could have for their employees.

Our adoption bell rang as we said goodbye to 87 amazing furry friends! Today we are celebrating the adoptions of many wonderful pets including Jethro and Chips! We are also excited to share that we finished off our fiscal year by cheering on our adoption counselors who reached 3,984 adoptions and our admissions team who completed 4,001 transfers. We are so excited for our newest alumni and our wonderful staff who amazes us every day with their life-saving work. 💙💙💙

Happy #FosterFriday from Toelene and her amazing fosters! Toelene has been loving her break from the shelter, and can't wait to find a home of her own. Her fosters say that her demeanor is calm yet playful and that she loves her plushy and squeaky toys. They also mentioned her smarts, and that Toelene knows "sit," and they noted how sweet, silly, and loving she is. Contact our humane center to meet Toelene or share this post with someone who might want to give this precious girl a loving, lasting home. We're always looking for more fosters! If you're able to share your home with homeless pets who need a little extra care and attention, visit our website to learn how you can get involved. #fosterdog #adoptrva

Our August Compassion in Action report is here! This month, we were able to shelter 658 homeless pets, treat 2,639 pets at our Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital, see 130 community cats at our Smoky's Spay & Neuter Clinic, and reach 186 children through our humane ed programs. Big thanks to our volunteers who put in 1,387 hours in support of all of these programs with their time and compassion. Your continued support allows us to help vulnerable pets in need. We can't wait to see what September brings! #loveliveshere
