Fighting poverty in New York City for 35 years.

About us

Robin Hood is New York's largest poverty-fighting organization, and since 1988 has focused on finding, funding, and creating programs and schools that generate meaningful results for families in New York's poorest neighborhoods. Since its founding, Robin Hood has raised more than $2.5 billion in dollars, goods and services to provide hundreds of the most effective soup kitchens, homeless shelters, schools, job-training programs and other vital services that give New York’s neediest citizens the tools they need to build better lives. In addition, Robin Hood's board of directors pays all administrative, fundraising and evaluation costs, so 100% of your donation goes directly to organizations helping New Yorkers in need.

At Robin Hood, we believe that every story we tell, every message we share, has the power to change lives. That’s why our communications team is attending #ComNet24 by The Communications Network, where we join others who are committed to using communication for good. It’s more than just sharing updates or numbers—it’s about connecting with people on a human level, inspiring hope, and showing that together, we can fight poverty in NYC. A special thanks to Kevin Frederick Thompson, our Managing Director of Communications, for leading the charge. Kevin ensures that Robin Hood’s mission isn’t just heard, but felt. His dedication to telling the stories of those impacted by poverty helps us bring their voices to the forefront—so our work is never in isolation but part of a larger movement for change. We’re also grateful to Crystal Cooper, Mary Power, Jasmine Baker Taddeo, and Cory Winter for their passion and commitment to making sure Robin Hood’s message reaches everyone who needs to hear it. Our fight against poverty is about more than policy or programs—it’s about people. And we’re committed to telling their stories, building connections, and mobilizing a city to stand with us. #FightPoverty

This morning, Robin Hood CEO Richard Buery joined a thought-provoking panel at the Financial Times Moral Money Summit, where he shared how Robin Hood is making strides in advancing equity and inclusion. The discussion—focused on rethinking corporate diversity efforts in a divided US—highlighted how DEI initiatives remain critical despite growing opposition. Alongside leaders like Roy Swan from the Ford Foundation, Rich emphasized that fighting poverty requires confronting systemic inequities head-on. And at Robin Hood, we’re not just talking about equity—we’re leading the charge. Nearly two-thirds of our grant portfolio now funds organizations led by people of color across NYC’s five boroughs. In the past year alone, we’ve increased our support to nonprofits led by New Yorkers of color by 10%, doubling the percentage of grants and tripling the dollars to leaders of color since 2020. Our fight against poverty is deeply rooted in advancing equitable opportunities for all New Yorkers, and we’re committed to fueling the change we want to see. New York City’s largest poverty-fighting philanthropy, Robin Hood, is making strides in equitable grantmaking. Today, nearly 60% of our active grant dollars fund organizations led by people of color across NYC’s five boroughs. This intentional investment means more resources for community leaders who understand the lived experiences of New Yorkers facing poverty. “We know that organizations led by people of color, who reflect the communities they serve, drive better outcomes. Equitable grantmaking isn’t just right; it’s necessary,” said our CEO, Richard Buery. Today marks the first-ever global DAF Day – an exciting new giving day dedicated to unlocking the full potential of donor-advised funds (DAFs). Robin Hood is proud to be part of this movement as we continue our mission to fight poverty and build pathways to opportunity for millions of New Yorkers. This year, our Poverty Tracker report revealed a stark reality: the most significant year-over-year increase in poverty since the study began in 2012, with 500,000 more New Yorkers falling into poverty. Now, more than ever, your support is critical in helping us provide essential services, education, housing, and job opportunities to those who need it most. We aim to secure 20 DAF gifts by the end of today to fuel this vital work. If you have a DAF, will you join us in this fight? Recommend a grant today to immediately impact NYC’s most vulnerable communities. Start here: https://lnkd.in/ejjiZ9ka. For those who don’t yet have a DAF but want to learn more about how it can further their philanthropic goals while supporting Robin Hood’s mission, check out our resources or contact schilling@robinhood.org for more info. Look what happens when innovation meets impact! This week, seven social ventures from Robin Hood Blue Ridge Labs presented their tech-based, community-driven solutions to address real-world challenges faced by New Yorkers experiencing poverty. These incredible ventures had the opportunity to share their work with volunteers from Deloitte, including their PPMD panel, who offered valuable feedback and insights. Each venture walked away not only with actionable feedback to strengthen their solutions but also with a small donation to help further their work. The day was filled with meaningful conversations, collaboration, and shared passion for fighting poverty in NYC. Big thanks to Deloitte for supporting our mission to create innovative, scalable solutions that lift New Yorkers out of poverty. 🤔 New to AI and wondering how it can be integrated into your nonprofit’s work? That’s exactly what we explored this week at the “Level Up Your AI Skills” workshop, hosted by Decoded Futures (Tech:NYC Foundation) and Playlab AI, with support from the Robin Hood Learning + Technology Fund. Held at Sesame Workshop, this event was all about empowering NYC nonprofits to start using AI to support their missions and drive educational equity for low-income students. We were excited to see: 🔹 Nonprofit leaders gaining hands-on experience with AI tools for service delivery and operations. 🔹 In-depth discussions on managing AI risks in nonprofit work. 🔹 Direct collaboration with technologists to answer pressing AI questions. 🔹 Participants leaving with practical AI “starter prompts” & Playlab tools for immediate use. This workshop was a key step in our ongoing effort to leverage technology for social good, and we can’t wait to see how our partners use these new skills to further their impact in NYC’s classrooms and in workforce development. 🔗 Find out how the Robin Hood Learning + Tech Fund is transforming learning for NYC’s students: https://lnkd.in/eJ5Sjnm6 #FightPoverty

The child care crisis in NYC is keeping nearly 1 in 3 working mothers out of the workforce. Robin Hood's new reports with the Center on Poverty and Social Policy at Columbia University show that families facing child care disruptions are 1.5x more likely to experience material hardships a year later. This is an urgent issue for the city’s economy and for families struggling to make ends meet. Kelly Escobar, our Managing Director of Early Childhood, recently spoke on PIX11 News to discuss these findings and the solutions Robin Hood is working toward. Since 2022, we’ve invested $23 million to expand access to affordable, quality child care across NYC, but more action is needed. Watch the interview and learn more about our efforts here. https://lnkd.in/eYurxr2H

New reports from Robin Hood and the Center on Poverty and Social Policy at Columbia University reveal the harsh reality of child care issues in NYC. Nearly a third of working mothers are held back from joining the workforce due to lack of affordable child care options. Half of all working moms face work disruptions, and those who experience child care-related job issues are 1.5x more likely to endure material hardships the following year. At Robin Hood, we're committed to addressing this. Since 2022, we've invested $23 million in expanding access to affordable, quality child care. It’s time to ensure every NYC parent has the opportunity to work without child care holding them back. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eFKpEAep #FightPoverty #PovertyTracker
