The period for a robot to orbit the Sun increases rapidly with the radius of its orbit. 🤖 ☀ You're right. That's Kepler. What is the common thread between his third law and Rodney Brooks' third law of robotics? TIME. ⏳ "Technologies for robots need 10+ years of steady improvement beyond lab demos of the target tasks to mature to low cost and to have their limitations characterized well enough that they can deliver 99.9 percent of the time. Every 10 more years gets another 9 in reliability." #robotdevelopment requires a diligence and patience our software-eaten world struggles to understand. But the closer a robot's perceived distance from our burning ball of ROI, the quicker it takes to reach broad acceptance and adoption. "It takes time to see how well the method works, and to characterize it well enough that it is unlikely to fail in a deployed robot that is working by itself in the real world...it takes many more years of shaking out the problem areas and building it into the robot product in a defensive way, so that the failure does not happen again."

How many times have you used Docusign and not given it any thought? This understated solution improved the manual 'signing and approving of things' process forever in 2003. People could move faster. A universal process was simplified because the solution just WORKED. 💪 Robotics and automation technology continue to get similar results, but in spurts. We believe, deeply, that these solutions will reach Docusign-like status. The key is minding the human-sized gap: Solving for existing, tangible problems, with robots that work and people that win. There's a difference between building things to do jobs and designing solutions for people.

Is a solution actually a solution if there is inherent difficulty? User experience isn't a nice-to-have. Strong #design should never be an add-on. Solution design and HRI (human-robot interaction) don't just inspire features on Carter™, they guide everything we do as a business, team, and human-centric solution provider. A product takes thought - a solution takes #intention.

Yes, we are most certainly nerdy enough to dig in, Leila Takayama… Thank you IEEE RO-MAN! Always excited to see HRI featured on the menu.

Thank you for inviting me to give a keynote talk at IEEE RO-MAN this year, Maja Mataric, Huan Tan, Selma Šabanović! What a great gathering of fascinating people with so many insights to share, questions to chew on, and ideas to develop together. https://lnkd.in/gimFsBQk If you are nerdy enough to want to dig into the philosophies in this presentation, here are the ideas that drove ubiquitous computing: https://lnkd.in/gaqhdVXv ...and here are the empirical studies on tools and non-human agents becoming invisible-in-use: * https://lnkd.in/gaKBWUVR * https://lnkd.in/gQXdXASt #humanrobotinteraction #ubiquitouscomputing #invisibleinuse #warehouserobots #humanrobotcollaboration

The stakes in physical space are higher and always will be. Physical elements are basic in definition compared to their digital counterparts, but an actual environment - and all the dynamic things in it - is incredibly complex. There are no car accidents in the cloud. There's no blood while making incisions on a digital twin. Being highlighted by AIM Research as a Physical AI Start up to watch was a good opportunity to step back and consider why being a solution for the physical world is a different sort of responsibility. In doing so, it's clear that we - and other companies on this list - must be tireless in helping people understand #physicalai and its transformative potential. ( 🤖 Blog link in the comments 🤖 )

"I want people to practice being good people. Machines should do what we need based on our desires and our actions...I'm pretty intolerant of systems that force users to change their behaviors a lot." Thank you, Front Lines, for hosting our Co-Founder, CEO & all-around great human and storyteller, Anthony Jules. Fully autonomous AND collaborative. Choice is a powerful thing. How you interact with and use Carter™ - based on preferences and the unique job at hand - is no exception. Warehouse automation, on the whole, needs to do more than fit specs and CAD drawings. It needs to meet or exceed expectations of the people using it. #robotsforhumans 🤖 🤝

Every Friday, we have employee "Coffee Talks," where our people have a chance to share their hobbies, passions, accomplishments, and overall lives outside - or inside - of work with the team. We enjoy hearing our people talk about... Being bit by the travel bug - and taking really amazing pictures (definitely some photography enthusiasts in here) Personal deep dives - whether it's into child development research, building speakers from scratch, making music, or documenting personal OKRs. We have many crafters of many things! Fun wins - in sports, in t-shirt design competitions, and school/side projects. #diversity as a strength is a core principle for us. While we are a very busy group, making room to celebrate the team we build and the community we aspire to build is what it's all about. To our network of diverse customers, partners, followers, and industry friends, have a great (unofficial) last week of summer. 🌤

Evaluating your space, preparing for a #robotdeployment, and adjusting to optimize workflows shouldn't mean weeks of pain. It's pretty clutch (not a handlebar joke...this time) to set up, get rolling and make changes without having to dismantle a bomb or plan a wedding. We love that Carter™ is designed to give your #workforce that flexibility. What would you and your team like to do more easily?
