Rochester is the fourth largest metro in New York State. Scenes from the Just Law Student Essay Awards, a competition that invited students to share their opinions on "What Justice Means to Me." In the fall, judges from the city and county visited our schools to help our students learn more about the justice system, showing them possible career paths and telling them about their lives. Over 145 RCSD students wrote about their views on justice. They produced amazing works! 12 students, representing the fairness of a jury of peers, were chosen and had the chance to read their essays publicly at the Hall of Justice. We are very proud of our students and the recognition they earned. Just Law is an acronym for Justice, Understanding, Societal Trust and Literacy, Attendance, and Writing. The program aims to teach students in grades 6-9 about the U.S. legal system and encourage positive relationships between them and court officials. Through interactive sessions and workshops, the students learn about the roles and responsibilities of judges, lawyers, and other court staff, as well as their own rights and duties as citizens.
