With 11 Nobel Prizes and five Turing Awards, you could easily hypothesize that Nokia Bell Labs stands alone when it comes to cornering the market on innovation. Thierry Klein doesn’t necessarily see it that way. Klein, the president of Bell Labs Solutions Research at Nokia Bell Labs, certainly is proud of the rich history of innovation at one of the most famous research facilities in the world, but he feels great innovation does not come in isolation but through collaboration — with industry, academia and companies, both large and small. Nokia Bell Labs, Klein said, always is eager to find partners. “We do not have a monopoly on innovation,” he said last week during a fireside chat discussion at the 2024 Middlesex County Business Summit. “We definitely want to partner with our customers, but also with new industrial partners, startups, ecosystem players – large and small – because a lot of different ideas come from talking to multiple people and a diverse set of people.” He then offered a welcoming thought to the few hundred gathered in the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center. “Consider this as an open invitation to talk to us,” he said.

Greenland? You can fly to Greenland – non-stop – from Newark? Next summer, that will be the case. United Airlines already serves more international destinations than any other carrier. This week, it announced new locations coming next summer from Newark Liberty – including non-stops to Greenland and three nations in Europe: Italy, Spain and Portugal. The five new routes out of Newark were part of a greater United announcement, which included additional flights from Dulles and in hubs around the world, including Tokyo-Narita (where you now catch flights to Mongolia). If these destinations seem unique, it’s because they are. Patrick Quayle, SVP of global network planning and alliances, said the carrier looks to not only add stops to frequently visited locations – but opportunities to unique spots in the world, for frequent travelers who are looking for a new adventure.

Ray Chambers is well known for his philanthropic efforts both in Newark and around the world — and for being mostly quiet about his profoundly impactful actions. Tuesday night in Newark, at an event marking the 25th anniversary of the Newark Alliance — a transformative organization he helped found — Chambers offered insightful thoughts about how the business world could help the city in which he has dedicated so many of his efforts. Chambers, referencing a poem read earlier in the night by Ysabel Gonzalez, the poet in residence at New Jersey Performing Arts Center, who spoke of the need to reach down and lift up, said the city has done wonders in its efforts — but still has a way to go. “The gap is there,” he told an audience of a few hundred during a panel discussion. Chambers addressed three key issues: Home ownership, internships and education.
