The long-held desire of city officials to increase homeownership in Newark is getting some help. On Thursday, Invest Newark announced a partnership with My Home Pathway, a leading provider of homebuyer education and resources. Invest Newark, the city’s economic development corporation, said the strategic partnership will unlock new pathways to homeownership for Newark residents. “In a city where 78 percent of our residents are renters, expert financial guidance is key to removing imposed or imagined economic barriers to homeownership,” Mayor Ras Baraka said.

Cepham Inc, a Somerset-based nutraceutical research and development firm, is taking strategic steps to bridge the gender gap in health research and innovation, with a focus on women’s health. Cepham’s plan includes increased funding for underrepresented areas, inclusive research designs, and enhanced communication to raise awareness and support for women’s health initiatives including Women in Nutraceuticals. “It typically takes 15-20 years for research discoveries to be adopted into clinical practice. This delay is a significant barrier to implementing new findings in women’s health,” Anand Swaroop, founder and president of Cepham, and director at large for WIN, said. “By closing these research gender gaps, we can ensure that women’s health issues receive the attention and resources needed for better health outcomes.”

A hospital can offer special shampoo for those who have coarser hair. Scar cream that is specifically made for those with darker skin. An audio device that offers verbal instructions to help those with visibility disabilities find their way around a building. Or even a registration system that helps those going through a name transition remain discreet as they navigate their way through the day. The examples are endless — but all point to how health systems determined to ensure health equity are making their hospitals more welcoming to communities that often struggle to feel welcome when they are looking for places to get care. A recent panel during the second annual Supplier Diversity Summit hosted by Johnson & Johnson and sponsored by the New Jersey Pride Chamber of Commerce and the N.J. Diverse Business Advisory Council detailed how the small changes healthcare systems are making have a big impact on so many underserved communities.
