I’ve been a Proposal Manager for nearly 20 years, I run a non-profit dedicated to bringing newcomers into this career field, and recently became the VP of a company that is developing AI-powered business development and proposal tools for GovCon. Throughout my career, three things have kept me up at night: 1. Working proposals all night because the workload exceeded the available hours. 2. Worrying about bringing others into Proposal Management, knowing that long hours, burnout, and unrealistic expectations are common. 3. Questioning if AI tools, like the one I’m helping to create, will replace proposal professionals. The concern about AI replacing us is valid and frequently asked. The reality is that AI will change how we respond to RFPs and shift what normal looks like for all of us. But I know two things to be true: - Proposal teams are not easily replaceable - We've needed a new, healthier, normal for a long time. Proposal teams handle far more than what AI can automate. There are more tasks than hours in a day, and proposal managers often endure stress, burnout, and 60+ hour weeks as the norm. Turnover in this industry is high, and it's easy to see why. When nights, weekends, and holidays become regular working hours, something has to change. Our industry needs help. We deserve tools that help us work more efficiently and better. We deserve a healthier, new normal. We deserve time with our families, friends, pets, and hobbies. We deserve to close our computers before 3 am. We deserve more time to focus on actions that AI can’t automate—actions that win contracts, such as shaping proposal strategy, understanding customer needs, teaming strategy, and developing win themes. How often are these crucial tasks neglected because proposal teams are just trying to keep their heads above water to get the proposal out the door? The goal is to win, not just to submit. People win contracts through strategy. Technology enables proposal teams to focus on strategy to win. I am ready to see a healthier, new normal in proposals and am excited to see what we can achieve when we reclaim our time ❤️
