Join us in our observance of World Brain Day!! 🌎🧠 Did you know… Challenging your brain through learning can potentially protect it from Alzheimer's and dementia? Just like your muscles, the brain needs to be challenged. It is important for people of African ancestry to actively engage in a lifetime of learning. Learning builds your "cognitive reserve" or brain strength by creating more brain cell connections. The more you learn, the stronger your brain can be to overcome and adapt to decline or damage within your brain. Tips to challenge your brain: 🥁Learn a new instrument or language 📖Read books 💃🏾Take dance ✍🏾Learn challenging subjects 🧩Complete puzzles 🎨Teach or learn a new skill Keep learning and engaging in new activities to protect your brain health! Use the QR codes and links for more resources, share this with others, and stay tuned for more information, as we work together to #mindyourbrain for a healthier future. #WorldBrainDay #BrainHealth #RootsCommunityHealth #RootsEmpowers #HBI #HealthyBrainInitiantive #Dementia #Alzheimers

Did you know? Diets high in refined sugar and saturated fats can significantly increase the risk of chronic diseases, such as, diabetes and heart disease. Maintaining a Nutritious Diet plays a crucial role in preventing Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. The African Heritage Diet and MIND Diet emphasize plant-based foods like leafy greens, fruits, and whole grains, which are essential for brain health and can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's. At Roots Community Health, we've incorporated these nutritious diets into our health and wellness workshops, to provide our clients and patients with useful tools to manage their health. Use the QR codes and links for more resources, share this with others, and stay tuned for more information, as we work together to #mindyourbrain for a healthier future. #RootsEmpowers #HBI #HealthyBrainInitiantive #Dementia #Alzheimers #AlzheimersAwareness #HealthyBrain #FoodForBrainHealth #SanJose #Oakland #SantaClaraCounty

I am overjoyed to share that last month I graduated Cum Laude from Santa Clara University as a double major earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Public Health through the University Honors Program. I am so grateful for the experiences that lead to where I am today. During my senior year, I completed conducting research under Dr. Linda Brunauer with the Department of Biochemistry, contributing to my first publication. As part of my Public Health Capstone, I conducted an innovative research analysis on birth control and female reproductive health information circulating TikTok. I also had the incredible opportunity to conduct my Honors Thesis with Roots Community Health , where I designed and implemented a Type 2 Diabetes prevention program in collaboration with the Forge Garden at SCU. As a Healthcare Ethics Intern with the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics, I wrote and published a piece on the ethical issues regarding the egg donation industry. As I close this fulfilling chapter, I'd like to thank my mentors, professors, family, and friends who have supported me throughout the challenging and often daunting aspects of my pre-medical journey. I am excited to announce my acceptance at Samuel Merritt College of Podiatric Medicine as part of the 2028 cohort! In addition to my acceptance, I was awarded one of two Reagent's Recognition Scholarships, as well as the Dr. Lewis Scholarship, and Sport's Medicine Grant, totaling over $100,000 in tuition. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to pursue my lifelong interests in medicine, surgery, and public health at my first choice program. I hope to utilize the skills developed At SCU to improve healthcare equity, especially amongst marginalized and unhoused communities. I feel so grateful to be able to do this in Oakland as a Bay Area native!
