The most recent U.S. Census report shows that poverty rose for older adults – the ONLY group that saw an increase. To make ends meet, millions of older people are grappling with high-risk debt. All of us want economic security as we age, and reducing debt is a critical piece of ensuring it. Certain kinds of debt, like medical, student loans, and credit card debt, held by millions of older adults strain their ability to live well and securely. RRF Foundation for Aging (RRF) is working with grantee partners to raise awareness about debt among older adults. As part of RRF's Call to Action to curb rising debt for older adults, check out Next Avenue's article on "Smart Strategies to Escape Credit Card Debt" by Lucy Lazarony. Lazarony shares strategies for addressing debt, as the average interest rate on credit card balances is now the highest on record. She offers reasons why it is so important to shed that debt, especially for older adults. This article is part of the "Debt Free" series, a Next Avenue initiative supported by RRF Foundation for Aging. Read the article below. https://lnkd.in/gYRSFwR2

“We have this huge generational shift where senior centers that were created by the Greatest Generation were carried on for the Silent Generation,” said NCOA’s Dianne Stone. “But there’s this new generation pushing in from behind, and it changes the way that we do things.” Stone recently spoke to The Christian Science Monitor reporter Ashley Milne-Tyte about the exciting evolution of today’s #SeniorCenters and how that evolution can attract and retain a more diverse community of members. From rebrands to rebuilds, table tennis to tourism trips, see how some innovative senior centers combat #Ageism and inspire participation.👇 https://lnkd.in/eKCQvkdd

Thank you, Laura.
Ageism Awareness Day is October 9th, an opportunity to draw attention to the problem of #ageism in our society and how we can reframe aging in our communities. Ageism — discrimination or prejudice against individuals based on age — is one of today’s most pervasive and damaging biases. And it is a bias against our own future selves because we all hope to reach later life. We hope you'll join us in our desire to drive more productive thinking about aging, break down harmful stereotypes, consider important intersections with racism, sexism, and ableism, and advance a more #equitable and complete story about aging. Read more in our latest #PointofView blog by Laura Rath and comment below to tell us how you are working to counter ageism. #AgeismAwarenessDay #TalkAboutAgeism #EndAgeism

Today is Ageism Awareness Day! When rigid stereotypes or negative views based on age seep into how we think, feel and act towards others or ourselves – that is ageism. We find it in our workplaces, health systems, entertainment, and the media. It’s everywhere. Let’s recognize ageism and name it when we see it. Check out RRF Foundation for Aging’s short video addressing ageism, age bias, and fostering age inclusivity, which is linked here. https://lnkd.in/gk-j8t68 Thank you.
