What is prayer wheel? In this month’s #HimalayanArtUpClose video, Rubin Museum senior curator Dr. Elena Pakhoutova and Smarthistory’s Dr. Steven Zucker take a look at an ornate handheld prayer wheel, a ritual object that is ubiquitous in Tibetan Buddhist culture. The action of turning a prayer wheel with conscious intent is believed to “recite” or “read” the mantras, activating and releasing them into the world for the benefit of all. Watch now: https://lnkd.in/eAYwksu5 The Rubin Museum of Art has teamed up with Smarthistory to bring you an ‘up-close’ look at select objects from the Rubin’s preeminent collection of Himalayan art in #HimalayanArtUpClose. Keep following us for a new video each month! #himalayanart #tibetanbuddhism #museumcollection #rubinmuseum

Today marks the Rubin's 20th anniversary! Over the past 20 years, we've been committed to sharing our collection of Himalayan art through landmark exhibitions, innovative programs, and inspiring multimedia content. Today we're highlighting the first painting Donald and Shelley Rubin acquired which led towards their long-standing love of Tibetan Buddhist art. This love eventually led to the founding of the Rubin Museum of Art. The painting depicts White Tara, a Buddhist deity associated with longevity and is a jewel of the Museum collection. Tomorrow (Thursday) and all weekend we'll have FREE admission, so visit us at 150 West 17th Street to explore the collection. And we can't wait to continue to share our collection with you all as we transition to a global model through traveling exhibitions, grants, partnerships with other organizations, and more. Keep following us to stay updated on our future projects and initiatives! _________ White Tara; U Province, central Tibet; 19th century; pigments on cloth; Rubin Museum of Art; gift of Shelley and Donald Rubin; C2008.34 (HAR 51)

It's the last month to experience our in-person Mindfulness Meditation sessions at our 17th Street building! Each week, our 45-minute program is inspired by a work of art from the Rubin Museum’s collection and guided by teachers. Last week's session was inspired by this painting that presents a listing of medicinal ingredients, or materia medica, and is one of several to do so in the famous set of medical paintings. In particular it shows materials that are mineral-based (e.g., golden sand and bitumen), tree-based (e.g. white and red sandalwood and eaglewood), resin or bodily fluid-based (e.g. digestive stones from various animals and animal musk), and shrub-based (e.g., spices such as nutmeg and clove as well as pomegranate and other fruits). Join us every Thursday at 1:00 PM to quiet the mind, open the heart, calm the nervous system, and increase focus. The last Mindfulness Meditation session in the Rubin's Chelsea location is Thursday, September 26. ___________ Earth, Wood, Nectarous and Plateau Medications (chapter 20 cont.); Chentsa, Amdo region, northeastern Tibet (Jianzha, Qinghai Province, China); artist Hua Khar; active 1990s; Qinghai Province, China; 1995-1996; pigments on cloth; Rubin Museum of Art; gift of Shelley and Donald Rubin Private Collection; C2014.9.24 #mindfulnessmeditation #lunchbreak

There is a little over a month before the Rubin closes the 17th Street building—so make sure to check out your favorite exhibitions before then! Start your next visit with "Gateway to Himalayan Art" on our second floor. "Gateway" introduces you to the main forms, concepts, meanings, and traditions of Himalayan art represented in the Rubin Museum collection. "Gateway to Himalayan Art" was the model for a traveling exhibition that, along with a digital platform and publication, is part of #ProjectHimalayanArt—an integrated initiative that presents a sweeping introduction to Himalayan art. The traveling version of "Gateway" is currently on view at Otterbein University in Ohio! The Rubin is open Thursday–Sunday from 11:00 AM–5:00 PM, with late, free hours on Friday until 10:00 PM. Join us during our final weeks at the Rubin’s 17th Street location as we invite visitors to co-create flags of good wishes for the future. The flag templates are designed by five artists whose work is included in the exhibition "Reimagine: Himalayan Art Now," including Asha Kama Wangdi, Kabi Raj Lama, Losel Yauch, Shushank Shrestha, and Yangdzom Lama. Visitors can add messages that bear their wishes for the future (and quite possibly their wishes for the future of the Rubin). Culminating in a public ceremony, more than 5,000 flags of wishes will be displayed outside the building at 5:00 PM on October 6, 2024.
