We empower students to build a better world by developing experiential learning centers w/ pathways to the green economy

About us

Runway Green is a non-profit, public-private partnership creating pathways for New York City students and families to thrive in the green economy. We believe that education and workforce development systems must be reimagined to empower New Yorkers from underserved communities to excel in the careers of the future, center climate resilience in their careers and neighborhoods, and build a better world. In partnership with the National Park Service, we are developing an unprecedented education and workforce development ecosystem on some of our region’s most ecologically rich parklands at Brooklyn’s Floyd Bennett Field. The first phase, breaking ground in 2025, will be a seven-acre learning ecosystem featuring a solar panel workshop, world-class science labs, a three-acre farm and greenhouse, a ropes course, an amphitheater, access to Jamaica Bay for marine biology, and a new high school. Each year, up to 50,000 New York City public school students will come to Runway Green at Floyd Bennett Field to learn, work, and intern with leading education and environmental nonprofits to build skills and mindsets focused on sustainability, solve real-world problems, and earn credentials in green careers. Subsequent phases will expand career-connected programming to support green-job training and professional development for adults.

Had the opportunity to kick-off this exciting Learner-Centered Ecosystem Lab journey this week in NYC with a site visit to see the inspiring work underway at Runway Green. It is an honor to join and learn with/from the 11 other amazing organizations involved. I'm equally excited to have my colleague Kristina Cola along for the ride!

The next step in our collective nationwide effort to transform public education is coming to life. We’re proud to announce the launch of our Learner-Centered Ecosystem Lab. Over the next year, twelve sites across the country will come together to advance pilots of learner-centered ecosystems. These sites span urban, rural, and suburban communities, and come from various starting points including out-of-school time providers, microschools, and public institutions. Together, Lab members will work with cross-sector experts and prototype solutions to the most pressing digital, social, and infrastructure challenges. Every child, inclusive of race, zip code, and circumstance deserves an education that is learner-centered. This is a big step in our movement to enable learner-centered education, and for young people to thrive. We’re grateful to be in partnership with these leaders and champions as we advance our mission.  Stay tuned for updates on how we’re reimagining public education! Welcome to our Learner-Centered Ecosystem Lab members: Big Thought, Big Picture Learning Native American Initiative, FabNewport, Lab School of Memphis, Liberty Public Schools, NACA Inspired Schools Network, Norris School District Academy, PAST Foundation, Purdue Polytechnic High Schools, Rock Tree Sky, Runway Green, and SparkNC. #Collaboration #Education #LearnerCentered #Community

What a gift. This week, we joined with members of our Learner-Centered Ecosystem Lab for two days in Brooklyn, where we ignited our collective efforts to turn community-based, learner-centered ecosystems into reality throughout the United States. Together we connected with the people, stories, and dreams guiding our lab communities. We played together, as we tried on the frameworks of liberatory design with the support of the Center for Love & Justice to undergird our efforts in unpacking infrastructure challenges and opportunities. And we explored the incredible space and planning efforts of the Runway Green design team at New York City's Floyd Bennett Field. The vast history, expanse and diverse ecological ecosystem of that natural space (500 acres bigger than Central Park!) on Jamaica Bay made the perfect setting to reimagine what's possible for public education, within, for, and integrating with our communities. Deep thanks to our Learner-Centered Ecosystem Lab members: Big Thought, Big Picture Learning Native American Initiative, FabNewport, The Lab School of Memphis, Liberty Public Schools, NACA Inspired Schools Network, Norris School District, PAST Foundation, Purdue Polytechnic High Schools, Rock Tree Sky, Runway Green, and SparkNC. #LearnerCenteredEducation #LearnerCenteredEcosystems

These 12 sites from across the nation, all came together with such an amazing spirit of generosity, vulnerability, and kindness. We launched our work with the power of stories at the Paramount Theatre in NYC. And we ended with a site visit to Runway Green meeting with their community design team. Inspiring! More to come! The National Park Service (NPS)—whose land Runway Green will be built upon—is a critical partner in this unprecedented opportunity to bring a learning ecosystem to Brooklyn’s backyard. We chatted with Jennifer Nersesian, Superintendent of the NPS’s Gateway National Recreation Area where Floyd Bennett Field sits. To read our full chat, click the link here: https://lnkd.in/eEGygn92
