One of the many agricultural innovations that have come out of Rutgers University! ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eYVHAxZU #RutgersInnovation #RutgersResearch
In 1928, Rutgers professor Lyman G. Schermerhorn set out to breed a better tomato. After years of crossbreeding experiments at Rutgers’ New Jersey Agricultural Experimental Station and testing by Garden State farmers, the Rutgers Tomato was introduced in 1934. 🍅 Prized for its firm ripe flesh, a deep red color and a balanced sweet and tart taste, the Rutgers Tomato, became the preferred choice of commercial growers, including Campbell’s Soup, Heinz and Hunts through the mid-20th Century. ❤️🖤 #NationalFarmersDay #RutgersTomato
