RWJBH Health Equity
Hospitals and Health Care
A healthier NJ starts with greater health equity. Discover how RWJBH is addressing inequities in health & healthcare.
About us
As care providers, we see firsthand how differences in access to quality care and differences in socio-economic conditions can affect the health of individuals and entire neighborhoods. So we have been taking action! We are addressing the socioeconomic conditions that impact the health of individuals and we are in our communities providing health education and programming, and connecting people with appropriate community resources. Through initiatives such as Wellness on Wheels and connections with local farmers markets, we’re bringing fresh, healthy foods to areas that are considered food deserts and other underserved communities. We’re providing safe spaces to ensure that patients of all races, ethnicities, and cultures have high-quality, equitable and antiracist clinical care. And we’re doubling down on our commitment to Diversity Equity and Inclusion hiring practices. As an anchor institution, we are committed to developing career ladders for our local and diverse workforce and supporting our local and diverse businesses. A community is only as strong as its least healthy residents, that is why we are in more underserved areas than any other health system in the state, and we will keep working to bring equitable care to all communities in the state of New Jersey.

Staff from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset recently participated in a “Plantscaping Party” to help welcome two families to the hospital’s Healing Homes transitional housing later this month. Staff from throughout the hospital volunteered their time to help with landscaping around the two hospital-owned homes in Somerville. Launched in 2019, the Healing Homes initiative offers transitional housing for Somerset County individuals or families who have an illness that caused financial hardship and are unable to afford housing. A case manager will refer participants to resources that help with their individual health issues as well as community resources that support basic needs such as employment, transportation, social services and permanent housing. #LetsBeHealthyTogether #healthequity

We partnered earlier this year with the Jersey Shore Chapter of The Links Incorporated, the Boys and Girls Club of Monmouth County, and Black K.A.R.E. to bring the Black Family Wellness Expo to residents of Asbury Park and beyond. The event brought awareness to important issues impacting the health of our communities and offered onsite wellness resources and screenings. We’re proud to partner with like-minded organizations to build and sustain a healthier New Jersey! #LetsBeHealthyTogether #HealthEquity

A spotlight on the wonderful community health partnership work between Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset with the Far Hills Race Meeting Association, helping youths learn - with teddy bears! - what to do in an emergency. #LetsBeHealthyTogether
As part of our Community Health Partnership with the Far Hills Race Meeting Association, RWJ Somerset’s Community Health Team coordinated a teddy bear clinic on Wednesday at LifeCamp in Pottersville, a six-week summer day camp for Newark area youth. Members of our Emergency Medical Services team demonstrated first aid techniques and discussed what to do in an emergency. Thanks for having us!
